 Scientific variables

 Testable question
 Hypothesis
THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD
Scientific method is an organized way to answer a
question or begin to solve a problem.

Steps are-
• Make Observations
• Ask a Testable Question

• Form a Hypothesis

• Design an Experiment to Test Your Hypothesis

• Draw Conclusions
What is a Variable?
DEFINITION

Variable – Any factor that

can change or controlled
in a scientific experiment

Independent Variable
 The condition that is intentionally changed by the
investigator in an experiment
 There can be only one independent variable in an
experiment
Identify the independent variable

ANS : Amount of fertilizer

Dependent Variable
 The factors that you measure or observe as data
 There can be one or more dependent variables in
an experiment
Identify the dependent variable

ANS : Growth of the plant

Controlled Variables
 The factors or conditions that are kept
the same (unchanged) in an experiment.
 There are many controlled variables in
an experiment
Identify the Controlled Variables

ANS : Amount of water

Type of plant, Temperature , environment etc
Fair Test

 A fair test is done by conducting the experiment

several times to make sure you get the same results
in each trial.

 For an experiment to be fair only one variable is

changed while all other variables are controlled or
kept the same.
Practice Questions

Identify variables for the

following experiments.

You can do it!

MINI TEST
 One tank of gold fish is fed with normal amount of food
once a day. The second tank is fed twice a day. The
third tank is fed four times a day during a six week
study. The fishes weight is recorded daily.

TESTABLE QUESTION
WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND
BY TESTABLE QUESTION?
A testable question is a question that can be
answered by designing and conducting an
experiment.

 What are the two parts of a testable

questions?
 Ans: Dependent and independent
variable
Write a testable question for the
given experiment.
Write a testable question for the
given experiment

Ans:
Will the amount of fertilizer affect the growth of
the plant?
PARTS OF A TESTABLE QUESTION

 Will the amount of fertilizer affect the growth of the

plant?

 INDEPENDENT VARIABLE
 DEPENDENT VARIABLE
Identify whether it’s a testable
question or not.
Q1. Why is pink a favourite colour for girls ?

Q2. Does the type of liquid affect how fast an

ice cube melts ?

Q3. What makes a magnet attract things ?

Trial Question 1
Write a testable question for the given experiment
Trial Question 2
Write a testable question for the given experiment
Trial Question 3
Write a testable question for the given experiment
HYPOTHESIS
WHAT IS “HYPOTHESIS”
 It is the initial building block for a scientific
method
 It is also called as an “educated guess” OR
“prediction”
 A hypothesis is always a STATEMENT and NOT A
QUESTION
 It is usually an “If….then…” statement
 A hypothesis should have both the variables in
it.
Identify the hypothesis
among the following
1. If the amount of fertilizer increases then
the plant grows more.
2. Pepsi is better than coke .
3. If a premium gas is used then the car
gives good mileage.

2. Pepsi is better than coke . X

3. If a premium gas is used then the car gives good

milage.
State a hypothesis for the
given picture

Testable
Ans:
If the height of the ramp is increased,
then the speed of the car going
down will increase
