The player presses the Play button to begin game play. The line combinations are evaluated at
the end of each game played. If the result is a winning combination, a win tune is played and
the win meter displays the number of credits won.

Some games incorporate a win-gamble feature that provides players with the chance to
multiply their win amount. This feature is initiated by pressing the Gamble button. If players do
not wish to gamble their win, they press the Take Win button to add the win to the credit meter.

When a player presses the Collect button and the value of the game credits is greater than the
collect limit, a Cancel Credit procedure is used to handpay the amount:

„ The message Cancel Credit Call Attendant displays along with the value of
credits to be paid out.
„ The attendant handpays the value of the credits and then resets the EGM using the reset
key.
„ The message Credits paid out $99.99 displays on the screen.

Main LCD Monitor

The main LCD monitor provides high-resolution graphics, displays game illustrations,
animations, player messages, operator menus, and informational displays.

Game-relevant information take up most of the screen area. The area at the bottom of the
screen displays credit, bet and win information. Between these two areas is the top message
display area. The main LCD screen is configured with a touch screen that enables games to be
played or options to be changed by touching areas of the screen.

Sounds and Tunes

Sounds and tunes are used in combination with graphics and animation to increase game
appeal.

Sounds are played to signify different EGM conditions, such as alarm, reel spin/stop, win, lose,
double-up win, and jackpot bell. Each game has its own sounds and tunes. The volume of the
sound system can be adjusted in the Sound System Setup menu.

A generic attract mode tune lasting approximately five seconds accompanies the attract mode
display, if enabled. It repeats at intervals specified in the Operator Mode menus. Attract mode
ends when the EGM becomes active.

Virtual Button Deck

The virtual button deck (VBD) is a touch screen panel with an LCD screen and a physical play
button that is used as a play/select button. It’s an integral component of the midtrim assembly
and is the interface between the player and the EGM. Button layouts of the virtual buttons can
vary in different jurisdictions and for different games.

Door Security
A series of mechanical and optical switches can be used to monitor door access. All of the
mechanical security switches are battery-backed to enable door access to be detected even
when the EGM is not powered.

If a door configured with a security switch is opened while the EGM is powered:

„ A Door Open message displays on the screen, specifying which door is open. (A Door
Mismatch message refers to an EGM fault in which the mechanical and the optical door
security switches are not operating correctly).
„ The alarm sound plays.
„ The EGM locks up, suspending game play.
„ The appropriate Door Accesses diagnostic meter is increased by one.
Reset the condition by closing the appropriate door or by correcting faulty or poorly aligned
mechanical/optical door switches.

In some jurisdictions, the cash box door security switch function is not required. To meet this
jurisdictional standard, a loop-back plug is installed to simulate that the cash box door is always
closed.

Door Security During Power Off

All doors are monitored when power is off. When power is turned on, a series of messages
on the main LCD screen show which doors have been opened and closed. Typical messages
are Door Open - Main, Door Open - Belly Panel and Security Cage Closed -
Main Board. The events are included in EGM logs and time stamped to power-on time. For
more information, refer to the Diagnostic Information section of the platform configuration
manual.

Bill Acceptor
During operation, the acceptor registers acceptances and rejections. Cash and vouchers
accepted increment the Cash In electronic meter and electromechanical meter. Detailed
information is recorded in the bill acceptor meters, which can be accessed in the Operator
Mode menus. These meters record the value and quantity of each bill accepted. A record is
also kept of the last five cash and vouchers accepted.

The EGM monitors bill acceptor operation and registers unusual conditions and faults by
incrementing the diagnostic meters, displaying messages and locking up.

Light Tower
A multi-level light tower can be configured on top of the EGM or on top of the topper to provide
an additional level of customer service, security, and house control. The tower can have
two, three or four tiers of different colors. The colors and functionality of the light tower are
determined by individual market requirements.

NOTE
After the main door has been closed, the bottom tier light will remain lit (unless it is
otherwise flashing) until the start of the next game.

Electronic Meters
Electronic meters record a variety of details relating to EGM operation, game play, and player
interaction, as well as a variety of statistical counts, security events, and past games. This
means there is a record kept of recent win and pay events.

When the EGM is switched on, it automatically initiates a self-test that continues in the
background as long as the EGM is in play mode. During the self-test, the EGM checks the
electronic meter data held in memory.

Some jurisdictions require electronic metering data to be stored in triplicate in three separate
battery-backed RAM chips. In the case of a meter malfunction in which meter sets do not
match, the EGM displays an error message and locks up.

General Description MARS X™ Portrait Hardware Service Manual

Electromechanical Meters
The EGM can be configured with electromechanical meters. These meters form part of
the comprehensive security system by recording the results of EGM operations. The
electromechanical meters can be accessed by opening the main door.

The meters cannot be reset and are cumulative for the life of the meter. Most of the meters
accumulate and display currency. Currency accumulations are accurate, although the meters
only display amounts in whole units. Stroke meters provide a numerical count.

To read the electromechanical meters, turn the meter/audit key anticlockwise to illuminate the
area and view the meters through the viewing window.

Electromechanical meters are monitored for abnormal conditions, cage accesses, and meter
disconnection. When an abnormal condition is detected:

„ Game play is suspended

„ The alarm sound plays
„ An appropriate lockup and operator message displays, selected from Meters Faulty,
Meters Cage Open or Meters Disconnected
„ The appropriate electronic meter increments, selected from Meters Faulty, Meters
Cage Open or Meters Disconnected
The condition is reset when the EGM condition is cleared, the lockup is removed and the door
is closed. Refer to Current Lockup in the Operator Mode menus.

NOTE
An EGM configured with electromechanical meters will not function if they are not
connected.
On delivery of an EGM, these meters are not set to zero because of factory tests.
Record the initial meter values before placing the game into service.

EGM Self-Monitoring
The EGM monitors conditions as it operates. If faults or other unusual conditions are detected,
the EGM enters lockup and increments the appropriate meters.

Self-test
When the EGM is switched on, it automatically initiates a self-test that continues in the
background as long as the EGM is in play mode. During the self-test, the EGM checks
the electronic meter data held in computer memory and carries out audit calculations
using essential meter counts. The self-audit calculation formula varies depending on EGM
configuration and jurisdiction.

The memory holds up to three copies of the electronic meter data. If the data in one meter
set does not match that in the other two sets, the data of the two identical sets overwrites the
incorrect set. If all three sets do not match each other, EGM lockup occurs. Reset the memory
to clear the condition.

Player Marketing Module

The EGM can be configured with an optional player marketing module (PMM) unit attached
to the Main Door frame. A blanking plate may be in place if the EGM is not configured with a
PMM.

The PMM provides a range of services for players through a magnetic stripe card reader, a
character display unit and service buttons. The functions are integrated into the venue casino
management system.

The PMM can be from one of several manufacturers. The following descriptions are based on
the Aristocrat PMM. While the internal components can vary slightly between manufacturers,
the functionality of the devices remains the same.

The player uses a magnetic strip card to communicate with the PMM system. The player
inserts the card into a card reader and the PMM reads the information stored on the card. The
host system determines who is playing the EGM and sends messages to the player via the
PMM’s LCD. The player communication function allows scope for the marketing strategies of
the venue. The PMM connects to the venue casino management system typically by RS-232 or
Ethernet.

Power Supply Unit MARS X™ Portrait Hardware Service Manual

Power Supply Unit

PSU Overview
The power supply unit (PSU) provides the necessary DC outputs for powering electronics and
other associated gaming peripherals of the EGM. AC power to the unit enters via the power
input receptacle, an internal fuse provides overall fault protection, the EMC filter ensures
standards compliance and filters the power before it is distributed to other blocks.

The main power on-off is controlled remotely via a SPST low voltage switch that is external
to the PSU. Two general purpose power outlets (GPO1 and GPO2) are available for use by
external peripherals that require AC power. Power at the GPO1 outlet is controlled by the power
supply’s remote on-off switch. Power at the GPO2 outlet is independent of the remote main
switch and is controlled by a rocker switch adjacent to the outlet.

Guidelines for Disposal of Lithium Batteries

Proper disposal of lithium batteries is of the utmost importance to Aristocrat Technologies Pty
Ltd, from a safety and an environmental standpoint. This section outlines safe disposal of
lithium batteries.

The importance of safety in the disposal of lithium batteries cannot be overstated. Aristocrat
Technologies Pty Ltd recommends that disposal should be done following the guidelines of
local, state and federal regulations. Regulations vary from state to state and country to country.
Therefore, used batteries should not be disposed of without contacting local authorities for the
proper procedures.

„ Batteries should not be incinerated without the guidance of qualified personnel using
proper procedures. Extreme temperatures can cause the batteries to rupture.
„ Preventing the possibility of a short circuit is recommended. This can be accomplished by
taping the terminals and cutting any leads.
„ Disposal of batteries is governed differently in different countries. European countries
set their own rules following directives 91/157/EEC and 93/86/EEC. In these countries
the manufacturer, importer and user are responsible for the proper disposal or recycling
methods being followed.
