 QUESTION

1. Describe type of ship engine according to each of the following criteria:

a) Types of fuel used
b) Cycle of operation
c) Number of stock per cycle
d) Types of ignition
e) Number of cylinders
f) Cooling system

ANSWERS

a) Types of ship engine according to types of fuel used

Diesel engines
This engine run on diesel fuel and is commonly used in large commercial, including
cargo ship and tankers. They provide high fuel efficiency and are relative easily to
maintain

Gas turbine engines.

These engines utilize gas turbine technology and can run on various fuels like diesels,
natural gas, or heavy fuels oil. They are favoruored for their high power output and quick
start up time

b) Types of ship engine according to cycle of operation

Two-stroke engines
in this engine, the power cycle (combustion) occur in two stokes of the piston. They are
typically used in smaller vessels due to their compact size and simpler design

Four stoke engines.

This engine complete the power cycle in four stokes of the piston (intake,
compressionexpansion and exhaust). They are commonly found in large ship and provide
better fuel efficiency
c) Types of ship engine according to number of strokes per cycle
Two-stroke engines
this engine complete the power cycle with just two strokes of the piston during its
operation
four-stroke engine
these engine require four stroke of the piston to complete one power cycle of its operation
which were( intake, compression, expantion and exhaust)
d) Types of ship according to types of ignition
Compression ignition engine (CI)
these engine commonly known as diesel engine, this engine ignite the fuel-air mixture in
the combustion chamber
Spark ignition engine (SI)
this engine also known as gasoline engines, its use spark plug to ignite the fuel-air
mixture in the combustion chamber

Example of compression engine and spark engine (CI and SI)

e) Types of ship engine according to number of cylinders
the number of cylinder can vary according to vessels power requirement and size of the
engine. Ship engine can have any cylinder 1to 14 or more cylinder example ship with
types of engine two have 2 cycle
11 number of cylinder
980mm piston diameter
22,000,000cc total displacement
f) Types of ship engines based on the cooling method :
Heat exchanger system\Air Cooled System
Air cooled system is generally used in small engines say up to 15-20 kW and in
Aero plane engines. In this system fins or extended surfaces are provided on the cylinder
walls, Cylinder head, etc. Heat generated due to combustion in the engine cylinder will
be conducted to the fins and when the air flows over the fins, heat will be dissipated to
air. The amount of heat dissipated to air depends upon:
(a) Amount of air flowing through the fins.
(b) Fin surface area. (c) Thermal conductivity of metal used for fins.
Freshwater-cooled engine
In this method, cooling water jackets are provided around the cylinder, cylinder head,
Valve seats etc. The water when circulated through the jackets, it absorbs heat of
Combustion. This hot water will then be cooling in the radiator partially by a fan and
Partially by the flow developed by the forward motion of the vehicle. The cooled water
is again recirculate through the water jackets.
Types of Water Cooling System. There are two types of water cooling system:
Thermo Siphon System In this system the circulation of water is due to difference in
temperature (I.e. difference in densities) of water. So in this system pump is not required
But water is circulated because of density difference only

Pump Circulation System In this system circulation of water is obtained by a pump. This
pump is driven by means of engine output shaft through V-belts.
Keel cooling engine
in keel cooling, sea water is used to cool the engine. The water is circulated through
internal pipes or channels in the ships keel to dissipate heat.
