1 In this experiment, you will investigate the motion of the ball rolling down a slope. Use

(a) Set up the experiment as shown in Fig. 1.1

block
E

Fig. 1.1

The distance between point P and point E is L.

Adjust the position of P so that L is approximately 70 cm. Mark the position of P
with adhesive putty. Measure and record L.

L =.............................................cm
(b) Hold the ball at position P, release the ball and start the stop-watch.
Measure the time, t, the ball takes to move between point P and point E.
Take measurements to determine an accurate value for the time t.

t =.................................................s [2]

(c) Adjust the position of P so that L is in the range 40.0 cm ≤ L ≤ 120.0 cm and Use
repeat (b) until you have six readings for L and t. Include your value from
(a) and (b).
Record your results in a table. Include values of t 2 in your table.

[10]
(d)  (i) On a graph provided on page 5, plot a graph of L on the y-axis against
t 2 on the x-axis. [3]
(ii) Draw a straight line of best fit. [1]
(iii) Determine the gradient and the y-intercept of this line.

2 In this experiment, you will investigate the motion of an oscillating mass. Use
(a) You are provided with two rubber bands. Using one rubber band, set up the
apparatus as shown in Fig. 2.1.

Adjust the clamp and boss so that the distance from the clamp to the bench
is approximately 55 cm.
The distance from the bottom of the rubber band and the bench is H1.
(i) Measure and record the height H1.

H1 =............................................... [1]
(ii) Add the mass hanger and the 100 g mass piece to the rubber
band. The distance from the bottom of the mass hanger and the
bench is H2.
Measure and record H2.

H2 =...............................................
Calculate (H1 – H2).
