• When and where did impressionism start?


Impressionism started in the early 1860s including Claude Monet,
Edouard manet, Fredric Bazille & etc. who worked together and
influenced each other in the stunning lady of iron, Paris.

• What did the impressionist painters react against?


The academical teaching emphasis on mythological or historical subject
matter.

• What characterizes impressionist painting (subject matter/motif, colours,


style/technique)?
In impressionism, the traditional subject matter was downgraded, and
attention was shifted to the artist’s manipulation of colour, tone, and
texture.

• How did the group of painters get the name 'impressionists'?


Monet’s painting Impression: Sunrise (1872) earned them the name
“Impressionists” from the journalist Louis Leroy writing in the satirical
magazine Le Charivari in 1874. The artists themselves soon adopted the
name. cause why not?!
