 Classroom Procedure:
1. Start by drawing pictures on the board of a toe and another
of toes. Next to that draw a foot and a picture of two feet.
Talk about the plural and singular words for each set of
pictures. Why do they think one is a regular plural and one
is irregular? Open up a short discussion.
2. Introduce Irregular Plural Nouns as a concept. Write a few
words on the board- man, tooth, mouse, woman, child,
deer. Have students volunteer to come up and write the
correct plural form for each.
3. Start a classroom chart of irregular plural nouns as a class.
4. Hand out the lesson pages. Review the singulars and the
correct plurals.
5. Watch the Video More than One or read the book One
Foot Two Feet by Peter Maloney.
6. Do the Activity.
7. Play the Sparkle game- Read a singular word out loud
and students spell the plurals one letter per student. If a
student says the wrong letter they are out.
8. Hand out homework.
9. Discuss any questions or problems students may have.
10. Do the practice page.

to make flash cards or a memory game. It
is the same info presented a bit differently.
You can decide if your students should copy
full sentences onto their cards.

This lesson introduces the irregular plural nouns that don’t follow any rules and therefore need to be
memorized.Student work in this lesson is focused on repetition and practice to memorize the plurals of the
10+ most common examples.
For home school students a fun additional activity may be a mad libs style game where your student fills in
the blank with plural or singular forms of words depending on the instruction.
For the activity, first grade students can copy just the singular nouns onto their flash cards but second and
third grade students can copy entire sentences using the words. Give them a simple sentence for each
singular word and for each plural.

You need:

- Your chart of irregular plural nouns
- Pictures to cut and paste if you choose
- Scissors
- Glue
- Markers and colored pencils

1. Your teacher will write words or sentences on the board for you to copy onto each of your cards.
2. You can color or decorate them however you would like but you should include pictures. You can cut them
out in your class or draw them yourself.
3. Cut the cards out.
4. On the back side of each card write the plural for the word on the front side of your card.
5. Use them to practice your irregular plural nouns.
