Cat® 777 (05) Off-Highway Truck Fuel Modes
There are 3 fuel modes available (Power, Standard Economy, and Adaptive Economy) to best suit the customer’s
application needs and for better fuel efficiency and productivity.

The fuel economy mode switch in the cabin allows the operator to select the required power reduction option depending
upon the haul road condition to save fuel. This switch will only be effective, if the parameter in the Forced Fuel Economy
mode configuration is set to "Not Forced".

Power Mode
When the Power Mode is ON, Engine works at full power (100%) to meet the demand. This mode is recommended for
optimized productivity (Tonnes per hour)

Standard Economy Mode

Straight power derate that modifies engine map for better fuel economy. Customer can set percentage derate from
0.5% to 15% with incremental rate of 0.5%. Factory default is 10%. Higher derate % in the flat haul road condition, and
lower derate % in the steep haul road may give better fuel economy. This mode is recommended for optimized fuel
consumption (Litres per hour).

Adaptive Economy Mode (AEM)
It helps to save fuel without limiting production. This mode is recommended for optimized tonne/ litre performance.

AEM is very different from Standard Economy Mode. Where Standard Economy Mode takes a flat percent reduction in
power to help you lower fuel consumption across the entire operation of the truck, AEM is searching across your haul
profile for segments where it can balance production and save fuel.

AEM determines the most efficient engine operating point when the truck is operating at steady state condition. Variable
derate based on customer inputs of two variables: fuel savings and production requirements. Machine algorithm is
looking for optimum fuel economy during all portions of the haul cycle based on customer variables.

Adaptive Economy Mode Explained

AEM will not suit all customer job sites. The reason: AEM needs stretches of haul road where the truck can settle into
a single gear and achieve a steady state speed. This steady state speed must be at full throttle and in second gear or
higher. If you have extremely steep loaded hauls where the truck is pulling the grade in 1st gear, AEM will not engage
during these segments. Nor will it engage if your haul profile changes grade and direction frequently - preventing the
truck from entering steady state speed. Fortunately for those of you in these categories, 777 trucks have 5 other ways
they continually save fuel. (Whether you meet these categories or not, we recommend you try AEM for a period. VIMS™
data will show you if AEM is working or not.)

If your haul profile includes constant grades and/or long flat haul segments, you can benefit from AEM. Here’s how it
works:

By engaging the switch in the cab, you are activating the AEM algorithm. The factory default setting is to look for a 1:1
ratio of savings. For example, AEM will engage only when it can take a 10% reduction in speed and save 10% fuel.

There’s a production safeguard included. You tell the truck what your minimum threshold is for production. If AEM is
active and the truck falls below the pre-set production rate, AEM disengages, and full power is restored.

Your operators are not likely to notice a difference in the truck’s operation. With their foot solidly on the throttle pedal,
the truck automatically reduces power to reduce speed and save fuel. You can go in and adjust the speed to fuel
savings. The ratio settings can be adjusted using the Advisor display / ET.

777 trucks are more fuel efficient whether you activate an economy mode or not but having two highly flexible options
like standard Economy Mode and AEM put you firmly in control of your individual day-to-day requirements.

Adaptive Economy Mode Required conditions, Configurations & Settings.

Required conditions:
» Long, consistent hauls
» 2nd gear or higher (will not work in 1st gear)
» Full throttle
» Economy mode switch set to AEM

Note: Constantly changing grades or rolling resistance will not allow AEM.
Configurations:
Two configurable parameters through ET: (Settings screenshot)

Configuration - Chassis 777

Description Value Unit

Automatic Economy Mode Minimum Fuel - Speed Ratio Percentage 100 %

Automatic Economy Mode Maximum Speed Loss Percentage 10 %

Setting change Step 1:

Fuel to Speed Ratio (F/S): Fuel savings to speed loss ratio
» Ex: 100% states that you will take a reduction in speed if it saves equal fuel as the speed loss.
» Ex: 105% states that you will take a reduction in speed if it saves 5% more fuel over the speed loss

Setting change Step 2:

Max Speed Loss: Maximum % Reduction in speed that the customer is willing to take
» Ex: 10% setting - sets the maximum speed loss AEM will accept. (Factory default)

AEM setting range:

Fuel to Speed Ratio (F/S):
» Factory Default: 100%
» Reasonable range of 100-120%
Note: Use lower values here for more opportunities

Max Speed Loss: Maximum % Reduction in speed that the customer is willing to take
» Factory: 10%
» Reasonable range of 6-20%
Note: Use higher values here for more opportunities, The power loss may feel odd without training.

Forced Fuel Economy Mode configuration:

The below configuration in ET allows the customers to work at any of the fuel modes all the time irrespective of the fuel
mode switch position in the cab dashboard.

Forced Fuel Economy Mode:

» Not forced - Operator can determine the fuel mode using the economy mode switch in the cab dashboard.
(Factory default)
» Automatic - Put put the machine in Adaptive Economy mode and the operator can’t change it with the
switch
» Manual - Put the machine in Economy mode and the operator can’t change it with the switch.
» Off - Put the machine in power mode and the operator can’t change it with the switch.
» On – Unused.
