Overview
Artists and artisans fill different roles in the art arena which helps in articulating a vision
through their art or craft. The work of artists tends to be shown in museums or galleries, while
artisans sell their skills at fairs and shops. Module 3 will recognize the various artist and artisans
that the Philippines were able to hone and develop as it provides the qualifications in order for
one to be known or hailed as a GAMABA awardee who was able to provide an enormous
contribution to the development of the Philippine artistry and culture. Moreover, the modern and
contemporary arts will also be discussed to show the difference between the two and how they
affected the world of art over time.

to hear the words ‘young artist,’ through media to refer to emerging musicians. An artist is not
only attributed to those who create art as an occupation, but also to those who are skilled in a
particular activity such as drawing, designing, composing, etc
On the other hand, an ARTISAN refers to craftsmen who make practical artistic products,
such as earrings, urns, stained glass, and other
accessories. Artisans gain their knowledge by studying
under master craftsmen and then practicing with
continued study. Artisans work to create something
new, original, and at times, provocative. They spend a
good portion of their time selling and promoting their
items in various marketplaces.

What is the difference between Artist and Artisan according to its category?
The formation of guilds during the later Middle Ages was a crucial stage in the professional
development of an artist. Their power as an artist during this period Cologne Cathedral,
was not based on their individual capacity, but on their willingness
to join and act together as guilds.
During the later Middle Ages, different practitioners of arts
in various towns and cities of a particular craft such as cloth
makers, shoemakers, apothecaries, masons, painters, sculptors,
etc. worked together to form guilds to gain control of the production,
standards, and marketing of a particular craft. This guild promotes
extraordinary power in stimulating support and growth among
artists.
Through the formation of guilds, artisans were also able to pull themselves out of the rank
of serfs on estates of nobility and day laborers as it stands as an established association for the
protection and socio-economic autonomy.

WORLD OF ARTS
Do you have any idea who are the movers and shakers of the art world the influential
players who have the power to turn around this vibrant industry? Though the art space has a
number of constituents, there are five principal players that form the core structure of this creative
community. These include the artist, the dealer, the curator, the critic, and the collector, and each
plays a pivotal role.
A. Artists
They are the prop, the mainstay of the art world! Their
beautiful vision and creative endeavors have to be recognized
and appreciated to help build a career and open up
opportunities. The artwork needs to be valued and receive
serious consideration by galleries, exhibitions, biennials, and
collectors alike.
B. Dealers
They are essentially the supporters and promoters of
an artist’s work. Their primary role is to spot talent, nurture an
artist’s career, generate exposure, and establish his/her
reputation. An art dealer handles the advertising, public
relations, and the mounting of exhibitions for an artist in
exchange for a commission at the sale of the work.

C. Curators
Curators have an eye and passion for all art forms. They
use their extensive knowledge of the subject and organizational
skills to coordinate exhibitions at museums, galleries, or public
spaces. Curators are responsible for the conceptual development,
design, layout, and execution of an art show. Art curators also
research artists and write catalog essays.
D. Critics
E. Collectors
Process of Productions
The process of creating an artwork does not always follow a linear progression. There is
given flexibility to artists on how to conceptualize and execute their ideas into reality. But this does
not mean that they do not follow guiding principles that govern the process of art production. This
process comes in three which are:
1. Pre-production where the artist always begins with the idea that he wants to express or
communicate with his audience
2. The production is the execution of the art
3. Post-production is how the art will be circulated not only in the art world but in many
publics

Art Medium and Techniques
Medium is the mode of expression in which the concept, idea, or message is conveyed. It
may be:
Moreover, according to Esaak (2019) examples are the medium Michelangelo used to
create "David"(1501-1504) was marble, Alexander Calder's stabiles employ painted steel plates,
and Marcel Duchamp's infamous "Fountain" (1917) made with a porcelain medium.
Furthermore, a chosen medium should not yield the same results. Let’s say giving two
different artists the same exact material and the general qualifier of “painting”s, the end product
will still vary minimally or on an exponential scale. This is where techniques come in. The
technique of the artwork shows the level of familiarity with the medium being manipulated. It
implies the necessity of additional tools or implements (eg., hammer and chisel may come in
handy for sculptors), or consideration of time (e.g., behavior of different kinds of paint especially
in drying time requirements), and the specificity of the site of creation (e.g., indoor or outdoor
production, therefore, it is the manner in which the artist controls the medium to achieve the
desired effect.

Essay
To reiterate the discussions from the previous page, an artist focuses on creating
aesthetically pleasing works, while artisans' work focuses on accessorizing and functionality more
than aesthetics. The work of artists tends to be shown in museums or galleries, while artisans sell
their crafts at fairs and shops.

In April 1992, the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan or the National Living Treasures
Award was institutionalized through Republic Act No. 7355. Tasked with the administration
and implementation of the Award is the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA),
the highest policy-making and coordinating body for culture and the arts of the State. The
NCCA, through the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Committee and an Ad Hoc Panel of Experts,
conducts the search for the finest traditional artists of the land, adopts a program that will
ensure the transfer of their skills to others, and undertakes measures to promote a genuine
appreciation of and instill pride among our people about the genius of the Manlilikha ng Bayan.
First awarded in 1993 to three outstanding artists in music and poetry, the Gawad sa
Manlilikha ng Bayan has its roots in the 1988 National Folk Artists Award organized by the
Rotary Club of Makati-Ayala. As a group, these folk and traditional artists reflect the diverse
heritage and cultural traditions that transcend their beginnings to become part of our national
character. As Filipinos, they bring age-old customs, crafts, and ways of living to the attention
and appreciation of Filipino life. They provide us with a vision of ourselves and of our nation, a
vision we might be able to realize someday, once we are given the opportunity to be true to
ourselves as these artists have remained truthful to their art.
As envisioned under R.A. 7355, “Manlilikha ng Bayan” shall mean a citizen engaged in
any traditional art uniquely Filipino whose distinctive skills have reached such a high level of
technical and artistic excellence and have been passed on to and widely practiced by the
present generation in his/her community with the same degree of technical and artistic
competence.

Major Art Movement
Contemporary arts are the art made today by living artists. As such, it reflects the
complicated issues that shape our diverse, global, and rapidly altering world. Through their work,
many current artists discover a personal or cultural identity, offer evaluations of social and
institutional structures, or even try to redefine art itself. In the process, they often increase hard
or thought-provoking questions besides offering convenient answers. Curiosity, an open mind,
and a commitment to talk and debate are the fantastic equipment with which to method a work of
present-day art.
The exact starting point of the genre is still debated however, many art historians consider
the late 1960s or early 1970s (the end of modern art, or modernism) to be an adequate estimate.
Given its “art of today” definition, you may be surprised to hear that contemporary art
actually has a relatively long history. To trace its evolution, let’s take a look at the major
movements and important artists that compose its history.
POP ART
Intended as a response to previous contemporary artwork
movements, contemporary art is thought to have begun on the heels
of Pop Art. In post-war Britain and America, Pop Art used to be
pioneered by means of artists like Andy Warhol and Roy
Lichtenstein. It is described as means of a hobby in portraying the
mass culture and reimagining industrial products as available art.
While the movement lasted roughly from the Nineteen Fifties
thru the early 1970s, it used to be reborn as Neo-Pop Art in the
1980s thanks to artists like Jeff Koons. what made it extraordinary
pop art was once that it appropriated some of the first ideas of Dada which is geared up of ready-
made materials which had been used for artwork. Dada was a motion that is in opposition to the
values of the bourgeois, the colonial, and even the nation. It was each anarchic as it was once
referencing anarchy which was followed due to the fact of the values the motion abhors and
despises. It is also the time of popular cultural icons such as

Difference between Contemporary Arts and Modern Arts
Modern Art is used for conveying the era of ‘Modernism’, a time where art is described
with various terms ending with ‘ism’s’ such as; Fauvism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism,
Dadaism, Cubism, Surrealism, Expressionism, Pop Art, and many other art movements which
have been discussed in module 1.
Aside from the discussed information about performance art, this art movement is one of
the broadest art forms. In this part of the lesson, I will enlighten you more about this movement.
Performance art comes in a variety of forms, based on language, music, and live arts.
Regardless of the media, purpose, theme, style, location, or size of the audience, performance
art can contribute to the culture, create community, and provide outlets for expression.
Below are the different types of performance arts:

symbolic gestures). Analogous forms of traditional non-Western theatre are sometimes also
characterized as mime or pantomime. (Britannica, 2020)
PUPPETRY
Types of Puppets
● Finger puppets, which are tiny puppets that fit onto a single finger
● Sock puppets, which are formed from a sock and operated by inserting one's hand inside
the sock, with the opening and closing of the hand simulating the movement of the
puppet's "mouth".
● Hand puppet or glove puppet is controlled by one hand which occupies the interior of the
puppet and moves the puppet around.
● Marionettes are suspended and controlled by a number of strings, plus sometimes a
central rod attached to a control bar held from above by the puppeteer
● Rod puppets are made from a head attached to a central rod. Over the rod is a body form
with arms attached and controlled by separate rods
Furthermore, aside from these kinds of performance arts there is also a famous art called
Indie Film.
