Destination Selection
Vietnam, with its rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes, presents an alluring
destination for exploration. Within the intricate tapestry of its tourism industry, River
Tourism emerges as a flourishing sector. Vietnam's rivers, notably the Mekong and Red
River, carve through diverse landscapes, creating a visual spectacle for travelers. Nguyen and
Nguyen's (2018) research elucidates the ecological importance of these rivers, emphasizing
their role in shaping the country's geography. River tourism becomes a dynamic means for
travelers to witness and appreciate Vietnam's picturesque landscapes, serving as a platform
for sustainable eco-tourism practices. River tourism in Vietnam is not merely a recreational
activity; it serves as a crucial conduit for travelers to engage with the country's cultural and
historical dimensions. Sirikudta, Archarungroj & Sirisuthikul (2019) emphasizes the cultural
significance of river tourism, showcasing how it facilitates exploration of historical sites and
fosters interactions with local communities. Vietnam's rivers, notably the Mekong and Red
River, carve through diverse landscapes, offering travelers a visual spectacle. Prideaux (2023)
highlight in their study the role of river tourism in providing an immersive experience of
Vietnam's natural beauty. The rivers of Vietnam have been integral to the cultural tapestry of
the nation. Ho et al., (2018) research underscores the transformative impact of river tourism
in fostering cultural exchange. Through this lens, travelers gain insights into traditional
practices, folk arts, and the everyday lives of communities residing along these waterways.
Vietnam's history unfolds along the meandering paths of its rivers, with ancient settlements
and historical landmarks adorning the riverbanks. The preservation role of river tourism is
that it offers travelers the opportunity to witness and appreciate the cultural heritage
embedded in these historical sites.
The Mekong Delta, exemplified by the iconic Cai Rang Floating Market, showcases the
cultural and economic significance of these vibrant markets (StickyMangoRice 2023).
Navigating the historical dimension, the Perfume River in Hue unfolds Vietnam's imperial
past through landmarks like the Imperial City and Thien Mu Pagoda, emphasizing the
interplay of historical sites and tourism development (Metta Voyage 2023). The Red River
Delta presents picturesque landscapes for river tourism, with examples such as the serene
countryside and traditional villages like Bat Trang, aligning with the role of natural
landscapes in enhancing tourist satisfaction. Along the Saigon River, urban river tourism
thrives with examples like the Saigon River Cruise, showcasing a blend of modern
infrastructure and cultural experiences. The Vietnam's rivers are not merely as waterways but
as vibrant, evolving stories within the larger tapestry of Vietnamese tourism (Võ & Peyvel
2016).
