Introduction
The year 2023 marks fifty-five years since the Lord totally
changed my life. It’s been an amazing ride, and I feel like
I’m just getting started.
1
anniversary of the night the Lord miraculously intervened
and changed the whole direction of my life. That experience
got my attention, but it is the revelation knowledge the Lord
imparted that has been the transforming power in my life.
1. Hell
The first real revelation that changed my life was about hell.
That is actually a great place to start. Not enough people
today think about hell, and even fewer teach on it. Psalm
2
36:1 says the reason the ungodly do what they do is because
there is no fear of God before their eyes. People need to
know that hell is a real place, and there is only one way to
avoid it.
3
(John 14:6). It was the revelation of hell’s existence and my
desire not to go there that got my attention and turned me
towards the Lord.
2. Salvation Is a Gift
Although the wages of sin were death, my dad shared with
me that the gift of God was eternal life (Rom. 6:23). All I
had to do to escape hell was receive what Jesus provided for
me through His death and resurrection. I knelt and prayed
with my dad right there in my bedroom.
5
but I’m convinced my experience with the Lord, years later,
on March 23, 1968, was a direct answer to that prayer.
6
3. Living Sacrifice
I knew intuitively that the Lord had a purpose for my life
from the time I was very young. I used to lie out in our
backyard at night and look at the stars and ponder what
life was all about…What was my place in all of this? But my
life was pretty well-planned out through high school, so I
didn’t pursue the Lord’s will purposefully.
7
That was it! That was what I was looking for. The Holy
Spirit had quickened the answer to my prayer to me. If I did
what Romans 12:1–2 was telling me to do, I would manifest
to my physical senses what His will for my life was.
8
4. My Relative Unworthiness
These prayer meetings, at least on my part, were very shal-
low at best. I would just pray a kind of standard prayer of
repenting for my sins—even if I couldn’t name a particular
one—and asking God to send revival. My prayers were
actually more for the benefit of my friends, not the Lord.
I wanted to be perceived as being spiritual in their eyes. I
wanted a little pat on the back.
9
my physical eyes, but I got a revelation of God’s purity and
awesomeness. All my pride and arrogance burned up in
the fire of His glory. Compared to most people, I might
have looked all right; but I saw myself compared to God’s
awesome greatness, and I came up way short (Rom. 3:23).
10
5. Unconditional Love
Instead of rejection, God’s love overwhelmed me. For over
four months, I was caught up in the love of God. I knew
that God loved me like I had never known before; and for
the first time in my life, I knew it had nothing to do with
my performance. He loved me because He was (and is)
love, not because I was lovely. That was a major revelation.
11
6. The Peace of God
I was in my first year of college and loved being out on my
own, but after tasting and seeing that the Lord was good, I
lost my taste for anything else. I made the bold proclama-
tion that I was going to quit college and just focus on the
Lord. That didn’t go over too well.
14
The Lord spoke so clearly to me and said, “If I granted
you that kind of growth with the puny root system you have
now, the first bird that landed in your branches would knock
your whole tree over. One puff of wind would uproot you.
You just need to focus on the roots below the ground, and
the growth will come.” He told me to quit praying, “God,
use me” and to start praying, “God, make me useable.”
I can see my body and feel my soul, but I can’t see or feel
my born-again spirit. I have to just take what God’s Word
says about who I am in the spirit and believe it. Jesus said,
17
to me after this. This is one of the greatest revelations I’ve
ever received, and it came directly from the Holy Spirit.
Man didn’t teach this to me.
9. Speaking in Tongues
When I got back home from Vietnam, it was during the
outpouring of the charismatic renewal. People everywhere
and in every denomination were being filled with the Holy
Spirit and praying in tongues.
18
The Holy Spirit doesn’t force you to speak in tongues.
I had to speak in tongues in faith just like I had to believe
it’s the Lord speaking through me when I teach. If I just
opened up my mouth, waiting on God to make me speak,
nothing would come out. I had to talk and trust that the
Lord was inspiring what I said. That’s the way speaking in
tongues works.
10. Faith
I had a close friend introduce me to faith teaching during
this time. I remember going to hear Kenneth Copeland
before he became well known. He was preaching on faith
20
in a small Assembly of God church in Ft. Worth, Texas. It
lit a fire on the inside of me.
I’m a very reserved guy and had never done this before
or since, but during Kenneth’s invitation, I got up and ran
circles around the church, shouting. It struck a chord on the
inside of me that had been just waiting to get strummed.
I’ve never gotten over it.
21
would be sin on my part to work a secular job. While Jamie
was eight months pregnant with our first child, we went for
nearly two weeks with nothing but water. Praise God for
Jamie! She never once complained to me. She treated me
much better than I deserved and still does (Prov. 31:10).
22
people showed up. I was ready to leave and go to the next
place in the morning, but during the night, the Lord spoke
to me.
23
1976. I went out to the local country and western music
station in Childress and talked to the manager. He was a
Baptist preacher, and he allowed me to start a radio pro-
gram that aired on his station five days a week.
Notice the last part of that verse says the Lord moves
according to the power at work in us. No power working
equals no miraculous results. What is the balance between
what God has done (grace) and what I have to do (faith)? I
found my answer in Ephesians 2:8–9, which says,
25
The Lord showed me that faith doesn’t move God.
God moved by His grace two thousand years before I was
born and provided everything I would ever need. His grace
has come to everyone (Titus 2:11), but not everyone has
received the benefit because not everyone has put faith in
what He’s already done (Rom. 5:2 and 11:6).
14. Discipleship
Jesus gave what is called the Great Commission in Matthew
28:19–20. He told us to make disciples not just converts.
This has been one of the biggest failures of the body of
Christ.
It’s true that our body and soul won’t be perfected the
way our born-again spirits are right now until we meet the
Lord in the air, but Jesus told us to pray His will be done
28
here on earth as it is in heaven (Matt. 6:10). Jesus not only
forgave our sins but purchased our health and prosperity
while we are still on earth (Gal. 1:4; 1 John 3:2). Jesus told
us in John 14:12 that we would do the same works that He
did, which included healing the sick.
Jesus said it was the devil who came to steal, kill, and
destroy; but He came to give us abundant life (John 10:10).
If something is good, it’s from God; and if it’s bad, it’s from
the devil. God is not the source of rape, murder, lust, and
all manner of ungodliness. We have an enemy who we have
to resist (1 Pet. 5:9). If we don’t resist the devil and what he
is seeking to do in our lives, he won’t flee (James 4:7).
We are the ones who give Satan free reign in our lives
through our sins or our ignorance. It’s the truth that makes
us free (John 8:32). And it’s only the truth we know that
makes us free. What we don’t know is killing us.
31
God is absolutely sovereign if you use that word the
way dictionaries define it: “first in rank, order, or authority.”
The Lord is at the top of the “food chain.” Nobody is above
Him or controls Him. But that doesn’t mean He controls
everything. He gave authority to us.
16. Authority
This led me to understand that the Lord won’t do what He
gave us authority to do. He told us to preach the Gospel
(Matt. 10:7–8 and 28:19–20). Even an angel wouldn’t tell
Cornelius the centurion how to be saved. Instead, he told
him to send to Joppa and have Peter come and share the
Gospel (Acts 10:1–5). The angel had the knowledge but not
the authority to preach to Cornelius.
32
Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but
such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ
of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by
the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately
his feet and ankle bones received strength. And he
leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with
them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and
praising God.
Acts 3:6–8
34
17. Faith Is Voice Activated
Proverbs 18:21 says,
But I say unto you, That every idle word that men
shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the
day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be jus-
tified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
35
For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say
unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou
cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart,
but shall believe that those things which he saith
shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he
saith.
Mark 11:23
36
business, then how will you treat me once I sign up?” I told
him he could leave.
38
It’s not like I didn’t have a vision for increase. We had
doubled the size of the ministry in the two previous years.
We were searching for larger facilities to accommodate
AWM and Charis. Compared to others and what we had
done in the past, we were stretching ourselves, but we
weren’t stretching God.
39
Don’t misunderstand. I knew the Lord wanted me to
have a worldwide ministry. I knew it was much bigger than
the TV ministry I had at that time, which only reached
3 percent of the U.S. population. I knew what the Lord
wanted me to do, and I was moving in that direction. I just
wouldn’t let myself see it. I could tell you what the Lord’s
will for my ministry was; I just hadn’t let myself go there in
my heart.
40
and or reliant on self. You can be focused on self as being
better than everyone else or worse than everyone else.
Both of those extremes are pride.
41
19. Imagination
One of the main ways I began to start taking the limits off
of what God could do in my life was to use my imagination.
42
convenience store on the corner,” or something like that.
You wouldn’t be physically looking at any of those things,
but you have a picture of them in your mind. That’s your
imagination. You couldn’t find your way home or find your
car in a parking lot without your imagination.
43
spend time seeing myself doing and being what He called
me to do and be. I had to start using my imagination.
20. Finances
Of course, everything in life and ministry takes finances to
get it done. I struggled in the area of seeing my financial
needs supplied probably more than any other area. As I’ve
already shared in this booklet, Jamie and I were desperately
45
poor for a long time, through my own misunderstanding
about ministers not working a secular job.
46
was talking about prosperity because I wanted their money.
It was true I needed more money to accomplish what the
Lord was leading me to do, but I wasn’t looking to them as
my source. I would gladly minister to people for nothing
and had done so many times. My free cassette tapes were
proof that I was willing to give anything I had to bless oth-
ers. My heart was to give, not to receive.
47
Fear of people’s criticism and rejection over prosperity
had made me timid when it came to receiving offerings.
We were getting by. I would hold meetings with a budget
of around $10,000, and typically get within $10 or $20 on
either side of making that budget. But the week after I got
that revelation, I held a meeting—just like the ones I had
been doing for years—and our offerings were over $25,000!
This was a major breakthrough.
48
offerings. I think the logic was that if I received the offer-
ings, I wouldn’t be able to complain.
So, the very first night, I got up and told the people I
didn’t need their money. I had just received a large offer-
ing at the last church I ministered in and was not a poor
preacher that couldn’t get out of town if they didn’t give.
The look on the minister’s face said he thought I just killed
the offering. That’s because most ministers ask for offerings
for their sake instead of for the people’s sake.
49
group and asked them to forgive him for not sharing these
things with them.
50
to put the kingdom of God first, and then all of these other
things will be added unto us (Matt. 6:33).
Conclusion
There is much more that I could share. We actually
have over 200,000 hours of free teaching on awmi.net.
Some of this material is from our college instructors and
conference speakers, but the bulk of it is all from revelation
that the Lord has given me. If you were to listen to all of this
teaching, twenty-four hours a day, it would take you twen-
ty-two years to go through all of it. If you were only able
to devote eight hours per day to it, it would take sixty-six
years to go through it all.
