Q2 Lesson Plan Project

Lesson Goals or Learning Targets (Word these as measurable student outcomes.)

Students can actively listen to the story read aloud, Creepy Carrots, and show their
comprehension of the story parts, then sequence the events in the correct order.

Lesson Objectives or Success Criteria (Word these as student actions, use verbs.)

Students will actively listen to the story and then cut out the sequence page to glue events in
the correct order. Students will show their understanding by answering questions aloud and
completing a carrot craft and opinion writing page on things they feel are creepy.

CSTP Rationale (Describe the ways your lesson aligns with California Standards for the Teaching
Profession.)

CSTP 1 Engaging and Supporting All Students in Learning – The students in my first-
grade class love to discuss the books we read. So, I will be asking 3 of them questions about
the book and then I will let 3 students ask a question.

CSTP 2 Creating and Maintaining Effective Environments for Student Learning – I will
be using lucky ducks (like using name sticks) so I can keep everyone engaged and focused.
The students love lucky ducks so it will keep them all on their toes and ready to learn.

CSTP 3 Understanding and Organizing Subject Matter for Student Learning – While the
students are doing independent work I will walk around and make sure that everyone is being
successful.

CSTP 4 Planning Instruction and Designing Learning Experiences for All Students - I
will move at a pace that makes it so all students can be successful. I will work in a small group
with those students who need a little extra help.

CSTP 5 Assessing Students for Learning – I will be collecting the student's opinion write at
the end to see how successful they were comprehending the lesson.

CSTP 6 Developing as a Professional Educator – I developed a lesson for the students to

take part in. I will be able to do this lesson and then improve later after.

Lesson Plan Content (Written narrative paragraph about the lesson content.)

Students will come to the carpet, and we will discuss our learning target for the lesson.
Students will actively listen to the story read aloud, Creepy Carrots. I will stop periodically and
ask who, what, where, when, & why questions to keep engagement high and make sure
students are comprehending the story parts.
After we read the story and talk about the order of events, students will go back to their desks
and complete a sequencing page. I will model the appropriate way to cut and glue and do the
first event for them as an example. I will walk around and monitor/assist any students with the
sequencing page.
Next, we will complete a craft by cutting out the parts of a creepy carrot and gluing them
together to resemble a character from the story. I will use the document camera and projector
so students can follow my directions for each step and have a visual to rely on.
Lastly, students will complete a very brief opinion write on what they think is creepy relating
back to the story read aloud, Creepy Carrots. The opinion write will already have the sentence
frame; I think _______ are creepy. We will brainstorm ideas of what we think are creepy on
the back of the sheet so they can use it as a reference while filling in their opinion writing. I will
walk around and assist students who are struggling. Once students have finished their
sequence page, creepy carrot craft, and opinion sentence page. They can turn and talk with
their elbow partner to share their opinion on what they find to be creepy.

Instructional Procedures

 Focusing Event (Describe how you will get students to focus attention on your teaching.)

The focusing event will be the story read aloud, Creepy Carrots. This story will engage
students and hook their interest by connecting to the characters in the illustrations and
the fun around the spooky season we are currently in.

 Instructional Strategies (Describe all instructional methods you will employ during the lesson.)

I will use read aloud, question prompting, visual aides with the book illustrations, I will
model the steps needed for the craft, sequencing page and the opinion sentence
writing using the doc camera and projector.

 Student Participation (How will you engage students and get them on board to participate?)

To keep student engagement high, I will randomly select them to participate in

answering questions by pulling lucky ducks with their number on them. I will use many
callbacks such as; Teacher-”MY VOICE ON”, Students-”MY VOICE OFF.” I will also
use a pattern of noises that they chorally echo as a class.
I will show them the finished version of the carrot craft so they can get excited about
the lesson.

 Formative Check (How will you check that all students are involved and engaged in the lesson?

I will use call backs, thumbs up and down, and call on students randomly to answer
who, what, where, when and why questions to check for understanding. I will also
check their sequencing page and their opinion writing page for accuracy and
understanding.

 Closure (How will you end the lesson purposefully, with intentionality?)

I will close out the lesson by restating our learning target and going over the success
criteria. We will check our work to make sure we are successful in reaching our
learning target.

 Assessment (How will you assess those students achieved the lesson goals or learning
targets?)

I will collect the craft, sequence page, and the opinion writing page to check student
understanding of the story parts and order of events as well as what their opinion of
what they think is creepy. I will be looking for accuracy and understanding of the
learning target.
