I (a) Describe the functions of sub base in the structure of a pavement.
(b) Calculate Group Index of the following subgrade soil: percent passing 0.074 mm = 45%, LL=45%, PI=20%. Rate this soil in terms of its goodness from engineering construction point of view. II Calculate the allowable Horizontal Tensile Strain in bituminous layer and allowable Vertical Strain in the subgrade of a flexible pavement having the following data: (i) Carriageway: Two-lane, (ii) Initial traffic in the year of completion of construction of road: 2500 CV/day (both directions), (iii) Traffic growth rate per annum: 5.0 %, (iv) Design life: 15 years, (vi) Vehicle damage factor 4.5, (vii) Lane distribution factor = 0.50, (viii) Effective CBR of subgrade=6%, (ix) The composition of the pavement is: Bituminous Surfacing 150 mm, Granular Base 250mm & Granular Subbase 250 mm, total thickness 650 mm, (x) Resilient Modulus of Bituminous Layer 3000 MPa, (xi) Vol of air voids, Va=3% and Vol of bitumen in the mix, Vb= 13%.
III (a) Explain the phenomenon of bottom up cracking in a rigid pavement.
(b) The spacing between the contraction joints of a CC pavement is 4.5m. Determine the tensile stress developed in the CC pavement due to contraction if the coefficient of friction between the bottom of the pavement and the supporting layer is 1.3 and the unit weight of CC is 2400 kg/m3. IV (a) Bring out the points of difference between WBM & WMM. (b) Describe bituminous concrete and briefly explain its construction steps. V (a) Giving the materials used, explain how the laying and compaction of a DLC layer is achieved. (b) Explain the causes and remedies for (i) alligator cracks, (ii) shoving. VI (a) Distinguishing between highway economics and finance, set out briefly various sources of financing a highway project. (b) Giving sequence of construction steps, explain any one method of tunneling in hard ground. ---xxx---
