PART 4: TALKS

Directions: You will hear talks given by a single speaker and will be spoken only one time. The
talks will not be printed in your test book. You will see three questions on each talk, each with four
possible answers. Choose the best answer to each question and fill in the corresponding oval on
your answer sheet.

STRATEGY OVERVIEW

LAMGUAGE STRATEGIES

In this chapter, you will learn how certain words will help you identify the purpose of
a question. These are the purposes you will learn about.
• identifying the sequence
• identifying the audience
• identifying a location

• identifying the topic

• identifying a request

The words you will learn in this chapter will help you develop strategies to choose the
correct answer. In addition, many of the strategies you learned in Part 3 will also help
you to answer Part 4 questions.

TEST STRATEGIES

In Part 4, like in Parts 1,2, and 3, some answer choices are designed to trick you. They
are written to seem like the correct answer. You must learn to recognize the w ay the
answer choices may seem correct:

• Some choices have words that sound similar to the correct answer.
• Some choices use words related to the correct answer.

• Some choices use words like the correct answer, but with a different meaning.
• Some choices have words used in a different context.
• Some choices have incorrect details.

• Some choices make incorrect inferences.

• Some choices repeat words used in the conversation.


Look at these examples:

Example 1

You will hear:


"Bilbo's Department Store has openings for cashiers, management
trainees, and buyer's assistants. Call 555-2121 to apply or send
your resume to 152 South State Street."

For one of the three questions, you might hear:

Example 2

IDENTIFYING THE SEQUENCE

You will read questions that ask about sequence. A sequence is the order in which
events occur: First, one thing happens. Then, something else happens. Finally, another
thing happens.
Look for these words in a question that asks about sequence:

IDENTIFYING THE AUDIENCE

You will read questions that ask about audience. The audience is the person or persons
listening to the talk.

Imperative Sentences
In the talks in Part 4, you may hear imperative sentences. Imperative sentences tell someone
to do something. The verb in an imperative is in the base form. The subject you is not
mentioned, so the verb is usually the first word of the sentence.
