Abstract

This research examines the level of engagement among Visayas State University (VSU) students in the

area of proper waste management, with a specific focus on their awareness, practices, and initiatives.

This study seeks to investigate the unique approach taken by the Viscan community in addressing

improper waste disposal. It also aims to evaluate the level of awareness among VSU students regarding

solid waste management and measure the extent of initiatives undertaken by Viscans in managing solid

waste.

This study employed a quantitative approach to investigate a sample of 200 students in the Lower

Campus. A careful sampling strategy was implemented to ensure inclusivity and diversity. Survey

questionnaires were administered to gather data on participants' awareness and waste production, as

well as their waste disposal practices. This study highlights notable obstacles in waste management at

the university, particularly in terms of varying levels of awareness and practices observed among

different dormitories. The prevalence of plastics as a prominent form of daily waste highlights the

necessity for focused interventions. This study examines the potential utilization of food waste as a

fertilizer, highlighting diverse approaches observed among students. This study examines the disparities

in perceptions of individual actions' adequacy in waste management solutions among students who

share a belief in their capacity to contribute. The participants showed a willingness to actively engage in

resolving waste management concerns.

This research provides insights on waste management practices among students in institutions like VSU,

highlighting the importance of collective responsibility in promoting a sustainable waste management

culture.
