Subject Description

This course portrays the various aspects of disability, their nature, forms, and impact
on the victims, their family members, and the community.

This course is designed to facilitate the students understanding of the severity of the
disability, their ability to differentiate the different forms of disability, and the existence
of various laws relating to disability.

Objectives

On successful completion of the course, the students should enrich their knowledge
about

(i) Forms of disability


(ii) Rehabilitative measures;
(iii) A multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation;
(iv) The role of the social workers in dealing with persons with disabilities
Contents

Unit I

Definitions, causes, types, and Prevalence of various disabilities. Prevention and


Management of disability at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels

Unit II

Misconceptions of people about disability: History and social attitudes towards persons
with disabilities Problems and challenges faced by the families of disabled people.

Unit III

Blindness: definition, way to detect, causes, characteristics, and preventive measures.

Deafness: definition, easy way to identify hearing problems, classification, causes,


characteristics, and preventive measures

Unit IV

Mental Retardation: Definition, Misconceptions about Mental Retardation, and an Easy


Way to Identify Persons with Disabilities, classification of MR characteristics, causes,
and preventive measures

Locomotor Disability: Definition, Way to Detect, Causes, Characteristics, and


Classification-Preventive Measures

Unit V

Rehabilitation of Disabled: Governmental Measures and Programmes for Persons with


Disabilities; Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016; Rehabilitation Council of India;
Role of NGOs ( Non-Governmental Organisations) and INGOs (International Non-
Government Organisations) in Rehabilitation of Disabled
