Assignment overview
Women-led startups in Africa face unique challenges in accessing capital. They raise significantly less
capital than startups led by men. According to the Africa Big Deal Report, only 4% of startups funding went
to women-led startups in 2022. At the same time, there is a clear distortion in how capital is allocated across
geographies with the less developed startup ecosystems receiving less funding. This imbalance in access to
capital is attributed to; a) lack of start-up ecosystems and networks that deliver relevant capacity-building
support for women; b) a biased or skewed allocation of start-up finance by investors and; c) lack of
knowledge and expertise to implement gender-lens investing strategies among VC firms and Funds.
IFC’s She Wins Africa program takes a holistic approach to addressing these barriers for women. At a
programmatic level, She Wins Africa will implement interventions to address barriers on both the demand
and supply sides across startups, ecosystems, and capital allocators.
She Wins Startups targets to support 100 women-led startups with investment readiness training, mentorship
and coaching and connections with investors. The 100 startups were selected through an open call for
applications that received nearly 3,000 applications.
