TEST 1 25 FEBRUARY 2014 10H30 – 12H00

ELECTRICAL MACHINES 2
QUESTION 1 [30]
1.1 The pole of a d.c. machine is divided into two parts, name them. (2)

1.2 Give a brief description of the armature core of a dc machine. (3)

1.3 State the generated voltage equation during armature reaction and describe
each of its factors. (3)

1.4 A 250V, short-shunt compound generator is delivering 80A. The armature,

series and shunt field resistances are 0,05 ohm, 0,03 ohm and 100 ohm
respectively. Calculate the voltage induced allowing a brush drop of 2 volts
and draw a complete labeled circuit. (6)

1.5 Illustrate how you would reach critical field resistance with the help of a fully
labeled open circuit characteristic of a d.c. generator, complete with the
changes that take place within the generator. (8)

1.6 What is the function of a separate external d.c. supply in separately excited
generators? (1)

1.7 State three functions of the commutator in d.c. machines. (3)

1.8 Briefly describe the armature winding as used in d.c. machines. (4)

QUESTION 2 [20]
2.1 State the equation that can be used to calculate Eddy current loss in d.c.
machines and explain the meaning of each term involved in it. (5)

2.2 Give a fully labeled circuit of a separately excited d.c. motor and show how
you would arrive at the equation that can be used to calculate mechanical
power developed. (7)

2.3 A 4 pole, 250V d.c. series motor has a wave connected armature with 200
conductors. The flux per pole is 25mWb when the motor is drawing 60A from
the supply. Armature resistance is 0.15Ω while series field winding resistance is
0.2Ω. Draw a complete labeled circuit and calculate the speed under this
condition. (6)

2.4 State the equation used to calculate the speed of a d.c. series motor before
the saturation takes place. (1)

2.5 What is meant by saturation in d.c. series motors. (1)

ELECTRICAL MACHINES 3
QUESTION 1 [14]
1.1 Describe “Flash point” with respect to the main characteristics of transformer oil. (2)
1.2 State four reasons why tappings are mostly not provided on the LV windings. (4)
1.3 Draw the vector diagram and the connection diagram of the following symbol: Yd11. (6)
1.4 What type of transformer cooling method is suitable for the use of Buchholz Relay? (2)

QUESTION 2 [24]
2.1 A 12 kVA single phase transformer has a voltage ratio of 1000/250V. At no load ans at normal primary
voltage and frequency, the input current is 0,8 A with a power factor of 0,2 lagging. When the secondary
is short-circuited, full-load currents flow in the windings, while the reduced applied voltage is 75V, and the
power input being 230 W. Determine:

2.1.1 the equivalent resistance and reactance of the transformer referred to the secondary, (9)
2.1.2 the maximum value of the voltage regulation at full-load and the load power factor at this regulation; and
(4)
2.1.3 the percentage of full-load current at which the efficiency is a maximum. (3)

2.2 The temperature rise of a motor after working for 50 minutes on full load is 17,8 oC, and after a further 50
minutes the temperature rises a further 28,9oC. Assuming that the temperature rises according to an
exponential law, calculate:

2.2.1 the thermal time constant; and (5)

2.2.2 the final steady state temperature rise. (3)

QUESTION 3 [12]
A 5 kVA, 500/250 V, 50 Hz, single-phase transformer gave the following readings:
