BVE III-12

We are on the part of the class where we will construct an item, which is the exciting part
because we are to construct one item based on the assessment type that was assigned to us in
reporting. The assigned assessment type to me is student self-assessment. Whenever some of my
teachers utilized this type of assessment, I always wondered why they chose it. I just have this
belief that it prompts cheating because students may give themselves a high score just to earn a
high grade. That is actually one of the disadvantages of using student self-assessment based on
the research that I did while studying this for my report.

Actually, even though teachers are aware that there is a high chance that their students
may not be honest in answering them, they are still advised to be utilized. This type of
assessment allows students to monitor their own performance, which will give them an idea of
whether they are doing well or not in the class. However, teachers are advised to make their
students used to answering such assessments so that they will be able to grasp how they should
assess themselves. This is actually a good idea because it will make students more engaged and
active during the class because they need to monitor themselves. Furthermore, they will be able
to decide for themselves whether they need to improve or not and make adjustments according to
their preferences.

Constructing a one-item analysis of self-reported inventories, a type of student self-

assessment, is not that hard for me because my basis is the learning competencies and objectives
of the lesson. However, it took me a long time to come up with one item because I don’t know if
what I did was right and appropriate for the grade level assigned to us. I find it amusing that we
can utilize the different types of assessment solely for self-assessment. I thought those various
assessment types could only be used in objective tests, but I’m wrong. I enjoy making one item
for self-reported inventories because I already have an idea of how I can use this type of
assessment in the future.
