COLEMAN JOINS THE WAR
EFFORT

The start of WWII was a pivotal

moment in our story. All US manu-
facturing was diverted to support
the war effort and Coleman’s pro-

tasked with designing equipment
for the troops, including a reliable,
compact stove that could run on
any fuel and in any temperature.
Our mechanics worked round the
clock and created the Model 520
Pocket Stove (later nicknamed the
G.I Pocket Stove). Those war-year
innovations cemented our reputa-
tion for reliable equipment, paving
the way for some of Coleman’s most
legendary products.

20
Confused About Tent
Water Ratings?
Are you confused about terminology such as
“hydrostatic head, water rating, water column and
PU coating”?
A tent’s waterproof properties are measured using
a rating called its hydrostatic head. Put simply, this
equates to the amount of water in millimetres that
the tent’s fabric can tolerate before any water drop-
lets seep through. According to European standard
DIN EN 343:2010-05 a tissue is rated class 2 water-
proof with a water column of 800 mm.
So, if a tent has a hydrostatic head of 3000 mm, it
can hold a 3 metre column of water on its surface
before any leaks through.
For groundsheet ratings, pressure needs to be taken
into consideration. When you walk over the tent floor,
pressure is applied to a small area that can force
water through the groundsheet fabric if it has a low
rating.
Coleman® uses polyethylene (PE) groundsheets which
are relatively heavy but provide guaranteed water
protection. PE groundsheets are ideal for family and
active tents where a very light weight and small pack
size are not essential.

Coleman's® robust exterior shield is designed to increase product durability. Developed to cope effortlessly
with more extreme wear and tear, in rugged or rough terrain, our technology allows products to withstand
higher levels of damaging impact. Be confident that this tough and durable, protective layer won’t break
and let you down.

We are not afraid of comparison!

In 2009, ANSI (American National Standards Institute) and NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Associa-
tion) defined the FL1 Standard as a set of testing procedures and reports to compare lighting products. Due
to the prior lack of standards, it was difficult for the consumer to understand performance measures. ANSI FL1
has now become the official industry standard throughout the world.
These ANSI FL1 standards are now present on all Coleman® products, and are defined in the icons below.
At Coleman® we are open and honest about our test scoring and are proud of the benefits our products have.
Now the consumer can compare our products 1-to-1 with competitors, making their purchase decision as
simple and transparent as possible.

FL 1 STANDARD LIGHT OUTPUT

Light output is the total “luminous flux” emitted by a source and is a measure of the
brightness of portable lights. The entire angular output of the light – from wide beam
000 to direct beam – is included in the measurement, and is given in lumens. The higher
the lumen value, the brighter the light.

FL 1 STANDARD RUNTIME
Runtime is defined as the duration of time until the light reaches 10% of the starting
value. The starting point is 30 seconds after the light is turned on, and the light is
powered by fresh, alkaline batteries during the test. The light you still see past this
10% value is no longer defined as “usable light” and is therefore not measured by
00h 00min
ANSI standards.

FL 1 STANDARD BEAM DISTANCE

Beam Distance is defined as the distance from the device at which the light beam is
00m 0.25 lux (0.25 lux is approximately the equivalent of the light emitted from the full
moon “on a clear night in an open field”)

BatteryGuard™ Lanterns
The Coleman BatteryGuard™ range of lanterns, available in three models, are an essential companion for
a camping outing and an around-the-home event. The lanterns come equipped with lifetime LEDs that have
a lifetime of 40,000 hours that are encased in a 360° globe. The design of the globe ensures an unobstructed
and shadow-less light output. The BatteryGuard™ function which is integrated with the light switch extends
battery life by protecting against corrosion and battery drain. With three options that offer different brightness
ranging from 200 to 800 lumens and size variations from mini to full-sized, the BatterGuard™ lanterns can be
used in versatile environments.

TM TABLE TOP AND BOTTOM

126
A GUIDE TO OUR FURNITURE FEATURES
ANTIMICROBIAL INFORMATION
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Inhibiting the ability of microorganisms to grow on selected Coleman® tables, the
Antimicrobial additive is mixed into the surface material before moulding, ensur-
ing that family meal preparation and consumption areas will be more hygienic. The
Antimicrobial barrier ensures the tables resist mould and mildew growth and it also
blocks unpleasant odours from developing.

IS IT SAFE?
Yes, it is totally safe. The active ingredient in the antimicrobial substance is also used
in common dandruff shampoos and artificial food additives. Consumers come in con-
tact with the substance daily and in some cases digest it without any ill effects. The
Antimicrobial surface is environmentally and eco-friendly.

HOW STRONG IS IT?

As the treatment is bonded in the material there is no risk of it being scratched or
washed off. It is very strong and it’s there for the life of the product. However, while
the table will prevent mould and mildew from forming, even when stored in humid/
damp conditions, it will not kill or remove mould or mildew itself, it’s not ‘self-clean-
ing’. The antimicrobial layer found on the Coleman® tables are merely a resistor layer,
not a bacteria-killing chemical. The tables will still need to be wiped cleaned after
eating or preparing food or using the surface of the table to store items.

LAB TESTING
When tested in our labs, the Coleman® Antimicrobial Tables were found free of fungal
growth, mould and mildew.

RIP STOP
Ripstop fabrics are woven fabrics using a special reinforcing technique that makes
them resistant to tearing and ripping. During weaving, (thick) reinforcement threads
are interwoven at regular intervals in a crosshatch pattern.

WHAT IF MOULD ALREADY EXISTS?

If a mouldy object was placed on the table, the object would remain mouldy, and
some of the bacteria could harbour on the table’s surface. However, the antimicro-
bial treatment would prevent the mould from impregnating the table and the surface
could be easily and hygienically wiped clean and safe.

ANTI-ODOUR Reduces up to 99% of Odour forming bacteria

How does it work?

The lining of a sleeping bag is treated with Anti-Odour treatment.

How effective is it?

The treatment reduces up to 99% of odour-forming bacteria!

Is it safe?
The active ingredient in the substance is also used in common dandruff shampoos and
artificial food additives. Consumers can come in contact with (and even consume!) the sub-
stance itself, so there’s no need to be worried about health or safety.

What if Odour already exists?

The treatment will not “cancel” the smell but only limit the creation of new odours.

SLEEPING BAG INSULATION
COLETHERM™
A synthetic insulation with hollow fibre insulation providing better heat
retention with less weight and a smaller pack size. Machine washing
does not affect its performance.

BRUSHED POLYESTER
Specially treated synthetic fabrics that look and feel like fine cotton com-
fort flannel whilst retaining all the advantages of polyester fibres: light-
weight, moisture resistant, durable and antibacterial.

COLETHERM™ MICRO
This high performance synthetic insulation is very light and compress-
ible, resulting in extremely compact pack sizes. It is a bonded micro fibre
insulation that works by trapping air around the fibre for a more effective
performance. It offers a great heat to weight ratio and as it is a bonded
insulation it has reduced fibre migration, eliminating cold spots.

146
Testing & Comfort Levels
Coleman® sleeping bags are all tested conforming to the European Norm for sleeping bags, specifically
§ Thermal Properties. This evaluation is done by placing a dressed thermal mannequin (top, bottom and
socks) in the sleeping bag. This bag with the mannequin is placed on an artificial calibrated ground and set
up in a climatic chamber. By determining the heat loss of the mannequin and through physiological models,
the thermal resistance values as well as the temperatures of use are calculated.
On all Coleman® sleeping bag hang tags and in this catalogue you will find a temperature scale which de-
scribes the comfort levels of our sleeping bags.

BUILT TO LAST
A GENERATION... OR TWO
Coleman® lanterns and stoves are
designed with the active camper in

the best it can be, the lighting brighter
and the whole camping experience
more fun for everyone.

A GUIDE TO OUR FUEL, LANTERN & STOVE FEATURES
FUEL, LANTERN AND STOVE FEATURES
Bringing comfort, warmth and light to the campsite, Coleman® multi-fuel and liquid fuel
stoves and lanterns are strong and reliable. They are build to last and designed to work even
in demanding conditions. The range of Coleman® Backpacking Stoves addresses the key
needs of today's explorers. Light-weight products without compromising on performance,
even in challenging conditions. The new range offers different stoves to choose from, all
running either off Coleman's® Performance Gas or the Coleman® Xtreme Gas blend which
boosts the stoves performance in cold conditions.

WHICH FUEL TYPE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

COLEMAN® LIQUID FUEL
Also called white gas or camping fuel, you can't beat it for camping in the winter or at high
altitudes. Burns hot even at subzero temperatures. And unlike butane and propane, output
doesn't falter as temperatures drop. Coleman® Liquid Fuel is very refined, and is cleaner
than other liquid fuels. It's relatively inexpensive and not difficult to come by. By carrying
the fuel in small refillable fuel bottles, you don't have the disposal considerations you do
with empty propane or butane cylinders.
Main advantages: heat output and economy.

BUTANE/PROPANE FUEL
Butane/Propane mix cartridges are lightweight, resealable, and easy to connect. Most
Backpacking Stoves are cartridge appliances to minimize weight by avoiding fuel tanks or
regulators.
Cold temperatures as well as declining fill levels during use affect the pressure in the car-
tridge, so performance is best in mild to moderate conditions. To compensate that Coleman®
has launched the Xtreme Gas blend which particularly serves the needs of Backpackers in
more challenging outdoor conditions. Xtreme Gas evaporates gas up to -27°C.
Main advantages: convenience and light weight plus Performance (when using Xtreme).

PROPANE
Propane is very convenient and easy to use. Just attach the fuel cylinder to the appliance
and you're in business. Coleman equipment is pressure-regulated at 15 psi to ensure steady
output throughout the life of the cylinder. Propane offers great overall reliability especially
in cold temperatures and at higher altitudes. Propane isn't the lightest weight option but it
offers great performance.
Main advantages: convenience and performance.
