Rhythmic Instruments

Learning Objectives:

- Students will know and be able to perform varying rhythms.


- Students will know and be able to identify and repeat a Rhythm.
- Students will know and be able to describe what Rhythm is in their own words.
- Students will know and be able to create their own rhythmic motives
- Students will know and be able to play rhythms on percussive instruments.

Song of the week:

1. Nunca Es Sufriente by Los Ángeles Azules

Learning Assessment:

- Students who tap, clap, or sing will be assessed on performance of the objective.
- Students will work on a form with the content of the lesson plan.
- Students will answer an aural questionnaire throughout the entirety of the lesson.
- Students will receive a knowledge chart at the beginning of class and at the end of class.
- Students will be assessed on performance within the percussion instruments provided.

Prior Knowledge:

- Students have knowledge of subdivisions and off beats.


- Students have knowledge of varying note durations ( 8th, 16th, triplet )
- Students have already selected their groups that they will participate in.
- Students know the daily setup and warm up.
- Students have knowledge of Rhythm basics.
Rhythmic Instruments
Scaffolding:

- Review the different parts of a song and it’s structure


- Review basic rhythm structures/students knowledge of what rhythm is
- Review note duration
- Review daily setup and activities.
- Review the definition of Rhythm
- Review percussion etiquette
- Review Syncopation

Strategies and Modalities Needed:

- Students can use shakers.


- Students can clap.
- Students may remain stationary and sing/clap their parts.
- Repeat songs multiple times until everyone has it.
- Handouts and paper as well as a verbal demonstration.
- Percussive Instruments ( Whatever the school may provide )

Materials and Resources Needed:

- Agenda
- Piano or YouTube track
- Student Participation
- Lyrics on the board or screen or handouts.
- Sheet music/notes in the board
- Handout of the rhythm in notation or have the students write them if needed.
- Music Stands or binders/folders
- Shakers
- Metronome or teacher tapping to keep pulse.
- Percussion Instruments

Learning Plan/Sequence:

Introduction (5 minutes)

● Greet students and do a quick attendance check.


● Review the daily setup and remind students of the warm-up routine.
● Read the agenda for the day.

Warm-Up Activities (10 minutes)

❖ Stretches and Call and Response


➢ Begin with physical warm-up exercises to energize the class.
➢ Engage in a call-and-response pattern to get students focused.
❖ Improvising to a Backing Track
➢ Have students use shakers to improvise movements to a provided backing track.
➢ Emphasize staying in sync with the beat.
❖ I Can Clap On
➢ Guide students in a rhythmic exercise where they clap on different beats.

➢ Use a metronome or teacher tapping to maintain a steady pulse.

Beginning Activities (10 minutes)

❖ Review
➢ Review the different parts of a song and its structure.
➢ Recap basic rhythm structures and check students' understanding of what
rhythm is.
➢ Briefly review note durations (8th, 16th, triplet) to ensure everyone is on the same
page.
➢ Remind students of the importance of subdivisions and off-beats.
❖ Play This Rhythm
➢ Use the piano or a YouTube track to play a rhythm. Have students play their
rhythmic instruments back.
➢ Gradually increase complexity and speed.
❖ Songs With Different Rhythmic Instruments
➢ Introducing the song of the week, "Nunca Es Sufriente by Los Ángeles
Azules”
➢ Identify and discuss different rhythmic instruments within the song.

Middle Connecting Activities (10 minutes)

❖ Rhythm Game
➢ Engage students in a fun rhythm game, reinforcing their understanding of
different rhythmic patterns.
➢ Use a variety of percussive instruments to create diverse sounds.
❖ Selection of the Rhythmic Performance Song
➢ As a class we will do a short listening party of 4 songs the students can choose
from
➢ Students will open the google doc link and vote on one of the four songs provided
in the doc to perform for our concert

Closing Activities (5 minutes)

❖ Instrument of the Week


➢ Introduce a percussion instrument and its role in creating rhythms.
➢ Discuss how different instruments contribute to the overall rhythm of a piece.

❖ Ask students to share one thing they learned or found interesting during the lesson.
➢ This may also be done in the form of a questionnaire handout form.
