Barber-Rotork Model “HQSP” & “HQH” Actuators
Barber-Rotork Model “HQ” hydraulic sell-contained, soring
return actuation systems operate without the noed of any
external source of actuation energy. These systems
operate unattended outdoors, in all climatic environments.

Operating Instructions of “HQSP”
Before Operating
Ensure proper installation has been carried out in
accordance with installation instruction form.
Opening Valve (fall close operation)
The latching trip valve toggle (located on “Presco-Pump.
Module") must be in the "LATCHED” or the “ARMED”
position before the actuator / valve can be pumped open.
Operating the pump will pressurize the hydraulic circuit
{an in turn open the valve. When the actuator is,
completely open against the end position stop, additional
pumping will force the hydraulic fluio past a pressure
limiting valve back to the reservoir thus protecting the
actuator against excessive pressure.
Shifting of the latching trip valve from the manually
*LATCHED" position to the "ARMED" position is controlled
by the status of the control / rigging ceviee (high / low line
sensing pilot, solenoid trip etc.) See operating instructions
for each dovice as required.
When the latching trip vaive has shifted to the "ARMED"
position, it will remain in that position until the pilot or other
S-way trip control valve signals a shut-in or the latching trip
valve toggle is manually pushed into the “TRIPPED”
position,

Tripping Control of Actuators
Most applications require the spring to operate the
actuator when a pressure source being monitored deviates
froma desired range.
‘A pressure responsive 3-way valve called a “Presco-Pilot”
(see Presco-Pilot bulletin) is most commonly used to
connect the control pressure te the latching trip valve,
When the monitored pressure deviates from the range
between set points, the “Presco-Pilot” blacks the control
pressure and allows the hydraulic fluid from the signal port
of the latching trip valve to flow to the reservoir,
When this ocours, the latching trip valve opens and allows
the hydraulic fluid in the cylinder to flow te the reservcir
and the actuator spring shifts the quarter turn valve.

After the actuator J valve has bean pumped open, the field
technician should make certain that the latehing trip valve
is in the “ARMED” position betore leaving the site.
Closing the Valves
The actuator / valve will emai in the open position as long
as the hydraulic fluid in the actuator cylinder is prevented
irom escaping
losing of the actuator / valve is intiated by opening the
latching trip valve, The latching trip valve can be shifted to
‘open “TRIPPED” position from the “ARMED” position by:
2, Manually pushing the toggle lever to override the
spring thus allowing the hydraulic fluid in the actuator
oylinder to flow to the reservoir
b. The trip vaive will automatically shift to the “TRIPPED”
position and close the actuator / valve whenever the
conta / tripping device allows the hydraulie fluid to
flow from the latching trip valve “SIG” port to the
reservoir.
‘The actuator cannot close the valve unless the toggle
lever of trip valve is unlatched and in the “ARMED
position.

Other Hydraulic Controls
electric controls are required, a solenoid operated 3
way valve can be mounted on the actuator and all
hydraulic connections will be completed in our facilities
in which case, only electrical connections wil be
required at time of installation,
‘The 3-way solenoid valve can be connected to trip the
actuator by either application or removal of control
voltage. Flow control valves or quick exhaust valves can
be added to control opening and closing speeds of the
actuator.
Additional trip control valves that have independent
Pneumatic or hydraulic signals can be added to the
standard circuit,‘Teenrical Bulatn 73.720,
