What is probability?
Probability is the mathematics of chance. The probability of an event is a
number between 0 and 1; an impossible event, 0; and an event that is
certain,1.
IMPOSSIBLE-There’s zero percent chance that event occurring.
CERTAIN- There’s a hundred percent chance that event occurring.

Practice 1.1
Directions: Write C if the statement is certain event and I if it is impossible
event.
a. Your heart will beat.
b. There are 3 Fridays in a week.
c. Sunday comes after Saturday.
d. The pig can fly.
e. It will rain today.
What are the elements of probability in simple events?
• Experiment- It is any activity with observable result.
• Outcome- The result of the experiment.
• Sample Space- Set of all possible outcomes written in S={ }.
• Event- Subset of possible outcomes in an experiment.
Example:
PROBABILITY Getting Head Getting even number
EXPERIMENT Tossing a coin Rolling a die
OUTCOME Head or Tail 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6
SAMPLE SPACE S={Head, Tail} or S= {1,2,3,4,5,6}
S={H,T}
EVENT E= {Head} or {H} E= {2,4,6}
Practice 2.2
