zlfs d laatst tw dcnnia) naar niuw richtingn hbbn g-

Sankt Pauli lijkt op ht rst gzicht n illustrati t willn
zijn van divrsitit n vrschidnhid. Ht gaat om n bouwblok
waarvan d gschidnis bijna xmplarisch is voor ht gvcht om d
vrdling van bschikbar middln, maar ook voor d conomisch
xploitatistratgin rond zakn als ruimt n woningbouw. Julli

op n plaats waar vrogr n klassik-modrnistisch compositi van

What is modrn today? What xactly is modrn? Is this a qustion
that mattrs to anyon today? And is th qustion still rlvant in
architctur, whr for various rasons th concpt of modrnity
has bn associatd with vry spcific formal-asthtic lmnts?
W propos to discuss this qustion in OASE bcaus w hav noticd
that ovr th past fw yars (prhaps th last two dcads) architcts
hav sarchd for nw dirctions. Th oppositional pair of modrnity
and anti-modrnity has vanishd and rfrncs to prmodrn typologis
ar not only allowd, but somtims prov to b mor contmporary
than thos from th historical modrn avant-gard. Prhaps somthing
similar applis to urban modls, as th disput btwn advocats of
th ‘Europan city’ and ‘modrn urbanism’, which ragd in Brlin in
th 1980s, has bcom compltly pass.
At first glanc your projct on Spilbudnplatz in Hamburg’s Sankt
Pauli district appars to b a rprsntation of divrsity and varity.
It’s about a building block, th history of which xmplifis th
struggls for rsourcs in th citis, but also th conomic xploita-
tion stratgis involving spacs and houss. Your projct r-crats
a traditional building block on a sit prviously occupid by a classi-
cal modrnist composition of slabs on a plinth. It is, or at last it
could b, rprsntd as such, a consrvativ retour­a
­l’ordre, and a
fictionalisd vrsion of th traditional urban form that nvr xistd
in this location. And in its architctural dsign, th nw block coms
across as a rathr light-hartd paraphras of th ad hoc urbanism
of Brussls rathr than th harmony-drivn implmntation of th city
of ston that charactriss urban rconstruction lswhr.
Your projct quit litrally opts for contrast and a multiplicity
of colours. Th qustion is prhaps whthr th vocation of contrast
and divrsity in a dsign can rally b plannd and producd. Your
projct is facing an xtrmly critical urban civil socity, and it
is positivly ovrloadd with xpctations: thr should b a lot of
social housing, it should srv a whol rang of groups, but it also
has a clint who has quit convntional xpctations of rturn on
invstmnt. Is it this mixtur that th projct has to xprss? But
thn: Can divrsity rally b organisd top down? And what xactly is
th rol of th public routs, som of which run through th whol
block? Is it about making prmability visibl, prhaps vn as an
antithtical commntary or undrmining of th urban figur of th
block? What is th lsson of this bautiful incongruity? Could it all
possibly hav somthing to do with th ‘difficult whol’ of Robrt
Vnturi in providing a synthsising compositional proposal, or is it

which is not only basd on th production of dsirs in th
PlanBud, th ‘planning shack’, with th Sankt Pauli Cod as a
st of ruls, but also on th urban dsign, which originats from
th collaboration btwn NL Architcts and BL.1 Th schm was
latr dividd into building plots and handd ovr to th individu-
al offics ifau, fld72 and Lacaton Vassal to dvlop individual
architctural projcts. NL Architcts and BL again tamd up on a
joint vntur to dsign th hotl and th Gradint housing block.
Howvr, th circl of playrs in th projct is much largr.
Th formr inhabitants of th dmolishd Essohausr, cultural and
non-cultural activists of Sankt Pauli ar rprsntd by th
Planbud. And thn thr ar th politicians, th administration,
th clints with thir projct managmnt, quality assuranc,
rtail and scurity advisors, spcialist nginrs for structural
nginring, building srvics and fir protction, th local
prss and th architctural disciplin. Thy all contribut to
th Cadavre Exquis.
This rply to your first lttr is a joint ffort – by both of
us – and this in itslf is a rflction of our shard authorship
as partial authors of th projct. Is this procss organisation
sufficint to liminat th acting subjct and to stablish a
collctivly producd objctivity? No. But w allow vryon to
bcom co-author, as th boundaris btwn top-down and bottom-up
bcom blurrd in th mixtur – control floats frly.
Sinc th projct structur is primarily dsignd to accommodat
th gratst possibl numbr of wishs, thr is a surprisingly
‘modrn’ sincrity in th thatricality of th architctur;
th arrangmnt and form of th buildings sms to mrg dirctly
from childrn’s drawings of th production of dsirs. Th
architctur is a litral translation of th Sankt Pauli Cod,
th functions of th lmnts such as th city balcony, th public
accss of th roofs and th appropriation of th facads by th
climbing wall can b rad in thir forms somtims vry xplicit-
ly, somtims mor subtly. Th world wantd a buxom hous: many
squar mtrs, many functions, many signs; it’s gtting a projct
that both xhibits and obscurs its contnt, that is its function,
which includs an xposd construction and a sophisticatd array
