Antonio Pigafetta (1491 – 1531) was a scholar and explorer from Venice. He joined Ferdinand
Magellan's voyage to the Spice Islands under the patronage of King Charles V. In addition, he traveled the
world when Magellan died in the Philippine Islands.. He assisted Magellan on the trip and kept an accurate
notebook, which helped him later when he was translating the Cebuano tongue. It is the first documentation
Antonio Pigafetta, wrote a book titled First Voyage Around the World with the intention of informing
readers by providing factual information. He was a well-known wanderer. Between August 1519 and
September 1522, he traveled with the Ferdinand Magellan-led Magallanes-Elcano voyage to the Moluccas.
There are five ships involved in this mission: Victoria, Trinidad, Concepcion, Santiago, and San Antonio.
Only three of these five ships made it to the Philippines, and only one of them—the Victoria ship, whose
survivors included Antonio Pigafetta, the author of a book on the mission—survived the Battle of Mactan to
return to Spain.
For a plethora of historical data vital to the study of Philippine history, the work served as the main
contributor. It proved that the Philippines had been inhabited for a very long time before to Magellan's
discovery, that it is a land of abundant natural resources, and also that the majority of Filipinos are indeed
friendly. The First Voyage Around the World made advancements in the fields of terrain, history, and
navigation by exhibiting that the world isn't flat and also that native goods did exist even before colonial era.
Lapu-lapu demonstrated that national identity is conveyed and performed; it also evidenced the Filipinos'
the first to preach Catholicism to the Filipinos, encouraging them to worship images. With all presently
known, we can draw the conclusion that the endeavor was and is still successful in giving us accurate
information about our ancestors. If we have these, we can better understand our own origins and learn to
The video and document made me more curious about history or what happened in the past that greatly
affected our present. The video talked more about Lapu-lapu. And with that I got to learn more and debunk
things that I thought happened before but was actually not true. The book had little say to Lapu-lapu but it
did document the voyages and helped us to know what really occurred in the past. History is fascinating. It
turned on my curiosity button because of this I got to know more about the voyages of Magellan and Lapu-
lapu.
