1. INTRODUCTION
Mr. Renjith.V, Vangasseri(H), Krishnappadi Stop, Puthoor is planning to construct a G+1
residential building at Ponnukkara, Thrissur. In order to select the appropriate foundation for
the building, Mr. Renjith.V decided to carry out detailed subsoil investigation. Work of subsoil
investigation was given to Mr. P.D. Biju, Biju Sub-soil Investigators, Methala, Kodungallur. The
work was carried out on 22.09.2023 and was completed on the same day. Two boreholes
were taken using rotary drilling. Standard Penetration Test (SPT) was conducted at regular
intervals in the borehole locations. Soil samples collected from various depths were tested
in laboratory.

This report contains the details of subsoil investigations done, results of various tests
conducted and recommendations for design of foundation for the construction of
proposed building based on the test results.

1.1. Scope of the work

a) Drilling boreholes at two locations at the site.
b) Conducting Standard Penetration Test (SPT) in the boreholes at regular intervals and
collecting soil samples.
c) Conducting laboratory tests on the soil samples collected for getting geotechnical
properties of soil.
d) Submitting a report providing recommendations for the design of foundation for the
construction of the proposed building.

2. FIELD INVESTIGATION CARRIED OUT

The location of the two boreholes (BH) where borings were done is marked in the site plan
(Fig. 1). At the borehole locations, Standard Penetration Test (SPT) was conducted at regular
intervals and also at depths where change in nature of soil layer was noticed. Soil samples
collected from various depths were sent to the laboratory for necessary tests.

A summary of the boreholes is given in Table 1.

3. DESCRIPTION OF SUBSURFACE PROFILE
3.1. Borehole-I (BH-I)
The soil boring plant was mobilized at the site on 22.09.2023 and the work of boring at the
location of BH-I was commenced on the same day. The top soil was brown silty clayey sand
having thickness of 2.00 m with SPT N value 3 at 1.00 m depth. It was followed by brown
sandy silty clay having thickness of 0.80 m with SPT N value 4 at 2.00 m depth. It was underlain
by red yellow grey lateritic silty clayey sand with gravel having thickness 3.70 m and SPT N
values 34, 14 and 10 at 3.00 m, 4.00 m and 5.00 m depths respectively. It was followed by
yellowish red lateritic silty clayey sand with gravel having thickness of 0.50 m with SPT N value
9 at 6.50 m depth. The Borehole was terminated at a depth of 7.00 m. The SPT spoon
rebounds at 7.00 m depth. Ground water table was located 0.30 m below G.L at the time
of boring. The boring at location of BH-I was completed on 22.09.2023. Details of the soil
profile at the location of BH-I are presented in Annexure-1.

3.2. Borehole-II (BH-II)

The soil boring plant was shifted to a location at BH II at the site on 22.09.2023 and the work
of boring at the location of BH-II was commenced on the same day. The top soil was brown
silty clayey sand having thickness of 2.00 m with SPT N value 3 at 1.00 m depth. It was
followed by brown silty clayey sand with gravel having thickness of 1.00 m with SPT N value
5 at 2.00 m depth. It was underlain by brownish red lateritic silty clayey sand with gravel
having thickness 2.00 m and SPT N value 48 and greater than 50 at 3.00 m and 4.00 m depths
respectively. It was followed by white brown lateritic silty clayey sand with 1.20 m thickness
with SPT value 15 at 5.00 m depth. The Borehole was terminated at a depth of 6.20 m. The
SPT spoon rebounds at 6.20 m depth. Ground water table was located 0.30 m below G.L at
the time of boring. The boring at location of BH-II was completed on 22.09.2023. Details of
the soil profile at the location of BH-II are presented in Annexure-1.

4. RECOMMENDATIONS
Soil investigation was carried out for the construction of G+1 residential building at
Ponnukkara, Thrissur on 22.09.2023. The scope of investigations comprised drilling two
boreholes, conducting SPT and lab tests. Bore logs, laboratory test results, and
recommendation on foundation design are presented in this report.

As the complete plan, structural details of the proposed G+1 residential building,
magnitude, distribution of loads at plan level are not available; recommendations are

3
being presented considering available particulars, normal loading conditions and soil
profiles at the locations.

For the proposed structure, strip foundation can be provided in the hard-sandy silty clay
strata at a depth of about 3.00 m from the ground level. A safe bearing capacity of 15 t/m2
can be adopted for a footing of width 1.00 m commencing from the hard-sandy silty clay
strata at a depth of about 3.00 m from the ground level.

Since water table was noted at a depth of 0.30 m, suitable systems for dewatering and to
prevent the sides from caving are to be adopted while excavating for foundation.

The above recommendations are based on data for two boreholes. Soils are inherently
variable and it is possible that the subsurface conditions at foundation locations could be
different from those reported for these two boreholes. During the excavation of work, any
deviation in the soil profile other than those observed in the bore hole tested is noticed, fresh
recommendations shall be obtained.
