Class 26
3 November 2023
Summary of Previous Class
• Force and torque on a closed circuit
Outline
• Nature of magnetic materials
• Magnetization and permeability
Nature of Magnetic Materials
• Different behavior of materials in magnetic fields
• Electron motion as a current loop
• The loop experiences torque in an external field
and tries to align the field produced by electron
with the external field
• Different components of electron moments
– Electron motion, spin, nuclear spin
• Combination determines the behavior of
materials
Diamagnetic Materials
• Diamagnetic materials: zero net field of
electrons
• Small internal field
• H, He, inert gases etc.
• NaCl, Cu, Ge, S, graphite
• Gold, Metallic Bismuth
• The effect is present in all materials
Paramagnetic Materials
• Atom has a small magnetic moment
• Average moment is zero
• B inside the material increases when external
field is applied
• Potassium, Oxygen, tungsten
• Used in masers
Ferromagnetic Materials
• Large dipole moment
• Formation of domains due to parallel line up
• Under external magnetic field, size of some
domains increases
• When field is removed, the residual moment still
remains: hysteresis
• Anisotropic
• Iron, nickel, cobalt
• Curie temperature
Anti-Ferromagnetic Materials
• Anti parallel line up atomic moments
• The net magnetic moment is zero
• Happens at low temperatures
• Not of engineering importance
Ferrimagnetic Materials
• Anti parallel but unequal line up
• Large response to external field occurs
• Ferrites: low conductivity
• Transformer cores
• Iron oxide magnetite, nickel zinc ferrite, nickel
ferrite
Super-paramagnetic Materials
• Ferromagnetic material in non-ferromagnetic
matrix
• Magnetic tape
