CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
WORKING PRINCIPAL OF CENTRIFUGAL PUMP.
A centrifugal pump operates through the transfer of rotational energy from one or more driven rotors
called “Impellers”. The action of the impeller increases the fluid’s velocity and pressure and directs it
towards the pump outlet.
CONSTRUCTION
A centrifugal pump has two main parts:
• A rotating element, including an impeller and a shaft
• A stationary element made up of a PVC (housing)
Impellers consist of a series of curved blades mounted on the shaft and coupled to the DC motor. The
main advantage of the impeller is it provide the rotary motion to the liquid. Here we use sinle side open
impeller.
Pump housing is made up of PVC, consisting of PVC endcaps and PVC socket.

CHARACTERISTICS’ CURVES FOR CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
INTERPRETATIONS:
Head Vs Flow Rate(H-Q) Curve (Orange Curve):
• When Head is minimum, Flow Rate will be maximum.
• When Flow Rate is minimum, Head will be maximum.
• We measure Head in Feet or Meters. Because pump manufacturer only knows how high their
pump can push a liquid.
• The pressure will vary depending on the liquid used but the height it can be moved by the pump
will remain the same.
• Quantity of water in given time frame may be (gpm/gal.m), (L/s) or (m^3/h).

NPSH (Net Positive Suction Head) Curve (Blue Curve):
• NPSH line is an upward curve which means as the pump flow rate increases, we see the MPs H value
also increases. We measure this in feet or meters. MPs H is the minimum pressure that must be
available of the suction inlet of the pump to overcome the entrance losses and avoid cavitation
• Pump performance changes with variable rotational speed.

CONCLUSION:
Based on the results of the experiments, it can be concluded that the Centrifugal pump is effective at lifting
water up to a height of one and a half foot. The pump's ability to achieve high flow rates and maintain a
stable output flow rate make it a reliable option for use in situations where access to electricity is limited.
By reading the characteristics curves we can conclude that our system has a Best Efficiency Point of
44% at head of 1.5 ft and flow rate of 0.04 liter/sec which required power input of 0.03W.
