2 WEIGHT-VOLUME RELATIONSHIP

• Soil is an assemblage of particles, and

Note that the weight of air Wa, is thus there are separate volumes of
assigned as zero since it is negligible solid and void.
relative to other weights of the • The voids are occupied with air and

Vs – volume of soil solids

Vw – volume of water in the voids
Va – volume of air in the voids
Vv – volume of voids = e

Water Content

The water content moisture

content, is the ratio of the
weight of water to the
weight of the solids in each
mass of soil. This ratio is
usually expressed as
percentage. When voids are
filled with air, water content
is equal to zero (dry soil) and
normally up to several tens
of percentages for fully 𝒘𝒆𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒘𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑾𝒘

Degree of Saturation

Degree of Saturation” (SR)

is an engineering geology
term and refers to the ratio
of the volume of water to
the total volume of void
space. The Degree of
Saturation or SR-value
ranges from 0% to 100%
(0% being completely dry,
and 100% being fully 𝑽𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒎𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒘𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑽𝒘
saturated).

Unit weight
Unit weight of soil is defined as the ratio of the
total weight of soil to the total volume of soil.
It is also referred to as Specific weight.
Mathematically, Unit weight of soil = Weight of
soil(W) / Volume of soil(V) The soil has void
spaces which may be filled with water or air.

Most Unit Weight
Moisture unit weight, abbreviated
as γm , is the total weight of soil
