Therefore, let us pray for courage and determination by those who are
oppressed....

We remember Martin's warning that "a negative peace which is the absence
of tension" is less than "a positive peace which is the presence of justice".

Therefore, let us pray that those who work for peace on our world may
cry out first for justice....

We remember Martin's insight that "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice

everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality tied in a single
garment of destiny.Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly".

Therefore, let us pray that we may see nothing in isolation, but may know
ourselves bound to one another and to all people under heaven ....

We remember Martin's lament that "the contemporary church is often a weak,

ineffectual voice with an uncertain sound. It is so often the arch-supporter of
the status quo. Far from being disturbed by the presence of the church, the
power structure of the average community is consoled by the church's silent
and often vocal sanction of things as they are".

Therefore, let us pray that neither this congregation nor any congregation
of Christ's people may be silent in the face of wrong, but that we may
be disturbers of the status quo when that is God's call to us....

We remember Martin's hope that "dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon
pass away and the deep fog of misunderstanding will be lifted from our fear-
drenched communities and in some not-too-distant tomorrow the radiant stars
of love and brotherhood will shine over our great nation with all their
scintillating beauty".

Therefore, in faith, let us commend ourselves and our work for justice to the
goodness of almighty God.

HOW DID IT COME TO BE?
THE REV. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. CELEBRATION
In the year of 1977, a meeting was called by Mrs. Barbara E. Baker, ask-
ing for a representative from different organizations in Beacon, New York, to
come to her home. It was a very, very icy night. The meeting was scheduled to
start at 8:00pm. I, Ruth Goins, showed up alone. Mrs. Baker came to door; I
was amazed to see that no one was there. We greeted one another and I stood
there and I said to her,"Mrs. Baker, where are the people"? She said, "Goins,
you are here, so the people are here".
I went in and took off my coat, and she said, "Goins; we're going to get
started. The meeting is beginning now". I said, "But, Barbara, how can we start
a meeting without people"? She said, "Well Goins; you are here, so the people
are here. We can do what we can do, fit's you and I". I said, " Come on, what
can we do, with just you and I"?
In a few minutes, the doorbell rang and Jeanette Briscoe and Gemma
Campbell were at the door. They were representing the Alpha Kappa
Alpha women. So we all sat there, the four of us. We were there from different
organizations; the good thing being that there were men as well as women. We
had a meeting prior to this, where we met with the men, and had stated why we
were there. So we organized ourselves and had someone to record, and we all
thought about where we had come from...........
People came from all around, willing to share their information with the
community, hungry to do something for the slain Drum Major of Peace.
It was amazing..........."

The Coalition was incorporated on April 14, 1981, four years after that
initial meeting. In 1986 the SDC Community Massed Choir was formed by
Sharlene Stout, with the help of Dorothy Medley.
In 1994 Sharlene, with the help of Jennifer Baker-McClinton, formed the
SDC Youth Community Massed Choir. Roy Martin was in charge of the
musical instruments.
In 1996 the SDC Youth Praise Dance Team was formed by Sharlene Stout,
with the help of Dorothy Medley.
Throughout the years, the Coalition has continued to be a vital, quality asset
to the residents of the Hudson Valley, with their unwavering commitment to
keeping the dream alive. Not even the death of the beloved founder and
chairperson, Rev. Barbara E. Baker, could extinguish the flame that was ignited
on that cold "icy" evening forty-six years ago.

Niomi Elizebeth Hart is a 14-year-old student
of Arlington School District and the creator
of the Niomi's Heart Foundation. Since
birth Niomi has been taught the value of
serving her community. She is the great
great-granddaughter of Rev. Mattie Cooper,
founder of Springfield Baptist Church, great
granddaughter of Rev. Barbara Baker, co
founder of the Southern Dutchess Coalition,
and granddaughter of Barbra Baker Baylor of
UUPATT. With this legacy in her blood, it was
natural for Niomi to have the heart to give back
to her community. Since the age of three
Niomi has served with various community
programs such as: James Brown Foundation;
UUPATT; Southern Dutchess Coalition;
Fashion Inspires; and Today's Students
Tomorrow's Teachers.
At the age of seven, Niomi expressed her
passion for individuals dealing with alopecia.
Niomi helped to care for her grandmother,
Niomi Elizebeth Hart
Barbra, who was diagnosed with breast cancer
and lost her hair due to chemo and radiation.
Niomi said to her mother, Kezia Euzhanne, who is a licensed hairstylist and master
wig maker," Mommy you should make wigs for people like Nanna so they can feel
Beautiful and Strong." This was the start of the Niomi's Heart Foundation.
Niomi, along with Kezia, work in helping
individuals with medically induced hair
loss feel confident by gifting them
custom wig units. Niomi has donated
proceeds from her annual Niomi's Stand
fundraiser to support the foundation.
Niomi's goal is to help in any way she
can to build her community to feel
confident to Fight Beautiful and Stong.
