sexual orientation, race, class, ethnicity,
religion and opportunity continue to persist across
the world. Inequality threatens long- term social
and economic development, harms poverty reduction
and destroys people's sense of fulfilment and self-
worth. This, in turn, can breed crime, disease and
environmental degradation.

requires investment, and subsequent use: both
the supply and demand for services needs to be
developed. To reduce inequalities between
countries, a destination needs to reduce the
outflow of money to other countries. Tourism
needs to be embedded in an overall economic
strategy to gain the highest local net product
possible. This includes strategic support for
small and medium-size businesses on site.

To reduce inequality, we need to understand


causes and consequences, which can be complex
and deeply embedded in social, economic,
political and environmental contexts and
resources. Efforts must be made to end poverty
and hunger and increase investment in health,
education, social protection and decent jobs,
especially for youth, immigrants, refugees and
other vulnerable groups.
