Jean-Paul Marat was born on May 24, 1743, in
Boudry, a small town in the Principality of
Neuchâtel, which was part of the Holy Roman
Empire (now in Switzerland). His father, Jean
Mara, was a Sardinian-born merchant, and his
mother, Louise Cabrol, was French.

Jean-Paul Marat, was a revolutionary,


gained popularity as a radical journalist and
political activist during the French Revolution
in the late 18th century.

What did he do? Known for his brilliant writings, Marat


passionately protested for the rights of the
lower classes, opposing the monarchy and
advocating for a more equal society.

Marat was known for his active involvement in


revolutionary politics. He was a member of the
National Convention and aligned himself with the
radical Jacobin faction. Marat supported extreme
measures, including the use of violence during the
Reign of Terror.

His articles, particularly in the newspaper
"L'Ami du peuple" (Friend of the People),
contributed significantly to the end of
public opinion, fueling the revolutionary
change.

Death
Marat's life was tragically cut short
when he was assassinated in his
bathtub in 1793 by Charlotte Corday.
Despite his controversial methods,
Marat became a symbol for the
revolutionary cause.
