Most of us are tired of seeing a handful of the richest corporations and executives behave as though theyre entitled to live like kings at everyones expense: They arent paying their fair share of taxes, so schools are cutting back and colleges are raising fees leaving students with obscene debts. Its time for the millionaires the richest 1% to start paying their fair share so we can support education and other vital services. Theyre destroying our democracy and right to a voice in the workplace. By making it almost impossible for workers to form unions and negotiate fair agreements, corporate America is dragging down the living standards for all working families. Theyre threatening to destroy Social Security and Medicare for future generations. We cant allow corporations to privatize and profit from these programs. Instead, we should close the loopholes so corporations and the rich start paying the same contributions as everyone else. Your decision to bring these and other issues to corporate Americas doorstep is courageous and involves some risks. We werent surprised that some of you have faced beatings and pepper spray from overzealous police. Your crusade to shine a light on the corruption and injustice thats infecting Wall Street is bound to ruffle some feathers. Weve experienced some similar rough treatment in Longview, Washington, where ILWU families are also taking a stand against corporate greed. Our fight there is against EGT, a multi-national corporation that took taxpayer subsidies to build a grain export terminal then betrayed workers and the community. Like you, ILWU members in Longview have been arrested, beaten and pepper spayed. We know that justice wont be won by asking greedy employers for permission or waiting for politicians to pass laws. Thats why we hope that youll stand your ground on Wall Street while we do the same in Longview because An Injury To One Is An Injury To All!

I'm in a hurry, so I'll have to keep this as brief as possible, but... Yesterday I sent an email announcing that supervised activities would be taking place at the already designated kids' zone, starting Monday. I came by today to set up only to find everything gone. I talked to a bunch of people and no one really had answers. Oh well. That rug was getting moldy so I understand that, but anyway... As a result, we'll have to put a hold on the kids' zone for now until we set up something new. Sorry! Matt

Hello everyone, A bunch of us are seeking volunteers and supplies to assist with a kid-focused space onsite. The kids' zone will hold supervised activities from 4:30-7 pm every weekday, starting Monday, which is when many working groups meet. The area will focus on activities for kids who are 4 years old and up, although younger kids are welcome with their caregivers. Donations sought include: - outdoor carpet and/or play mats - watercolors and other art supplies - building toys (legos, building blocks, etc.) - kid's books - board games and memory games - project and activity books I will be available tomorrow from 4:30 til 7; please let me know if anyone else is interested in helping out! Kudos, Mr Reilly!Thank You for having the courage and foresight to see past the transparently false and empty patriotism perpetually touted by the defense skanks and petro whores in Congress in order to keep their campaign coffers filled to the brim. Meanwhile, your brothers and sisters suffer massive cuts and are forced to live with PTSD, with little if any help from the very government and country for which you have sacrificed so much. Thank you for recognizing this movement not as a bunch of screaming white liberal kids with Henna tattoos, but as a universal and profound rejection of the unchecked and undue influence the plutocrats on Wall Street have had on the decision-making in Washington. Thank You for your service, and thank you for seeing through all the mountains of bullsh#t being shoveled around the clock by the Koch Bros. puppets in Washington via their lapdogs in the media. Its safe to say to if Mr. Reilly and his fellow marines lend their voices, it could be a defining moment that gives the Occupation of Wall Street movement the just right amount of fuel it needs to catch fire. I can't really do anything about this potentially dangerous idea, but I'll point it out here in case someone else knows better: A delightfully pointed sign from a video of the current occupations caught my attention, openly stating that "The 99% includes the cops." Which made me wonder about what other groups would be included, and the US military came to mind. Especially from what I've heard about recruitment frequently targeting the poor. A little support from the barracks would be rather unsettling for the people in charge, wouldn't it?

If OWS could identify a few basic problems -- overconcentration of capital, regulatory capture, overweening influence of money on politics, excess financialization of the economy, tax unfairness, etc -- and propose some first-step solutions to all of those things (break up the banks, force bailout recipients to give up lobbying, end the carried interest and capital gains exemptions as Michael points out, etc), you'd have more allies, you'd be educating the public about a subject that it has a tough time getting real information about through normal media, and it would prevent the other side of the debate from being able to define the movement in their own
(inevitably unflattering) terms. The only thing preventing millions of people from going out onto the streets on their own is that they don't understand how Wall Street works or what it does. That to me is why the movement needs to be specific. It has a responsibility to explain these problems to the general public and to show that solutions do exist and that they're attainable. People I think need more than just the knowledge that they can protest -- they need to believe that they can fix things and that someone out there has the answers. And a lot of the people on this email list do have the answers and could provide that leadership that is so desperately needed.

priority is establishing their presence, building a critical mass and representation around the US. There should be a clever way of throwing the demand for demands back on the media: "It has taken years to create this mess, the public has been sold on the idea that it is powerless. Our first aim is to convey that the bottom 99% doesn't merely have the right to a seat at the table, it should not have to negotiate with the top 1% because the elites depend on our acquiescence and support for their very survival." There has to be a nice way to say that, but I would brush off the demand and make it clear that organization/membership building and (I hate to use that tired 60s term, but it fits) consciousness raising are the first priorities. The more the numbers swell, the more power this effort has. Issuing demands is not on the critical path right now and has the potential to deter people from joining. The broader public understands damned well what the aims are even if the elites and their media lapdogs are playing stupid. TBTF: As George Shultz famously said, "If they're too big to fail, make them smaller." The bailouts have made the TBTF banks an even bigger, less competitive oligarchy. Bring back competition by limiting the size of these, either in terms of % of deposits or dollar amounts. Many ways to accomplish this, including
an FDIC caps on insurance would be effective. (Bring now private citizen Sheila Bair into the discussion) These are all doable measurable goals, that can have a real impact on legislation, the economy and taxes. The more people show up, continue to look like a good cross section of America, and make statements individually (via sites like We are the 99%, via their placards or when interviewed with the press) that resonate with people, the more the space of what is possible gets bigger. I am for elaborating collective discourse, but perhaps better in terms of general GOALS rather than demands. Demads are naive at this point, to put it shoftly. This is not incompatible with strategic actions that may achieve short term victories. Due to our location I think we should provide our view of the economic facts, and prioritize our actions toward short term and long term solutions. Regarding the elaboration of collective discourse, perhaps we should try some form of open source or similar wiki-process that would facilitate multiple contributions from diverse viewpoints. And a lot of the people on this email list do have the answers and could provide that leadership that is so desperately needed.
