Superlatives

● Use: To describe the quality of one thing, activity, person, etc. in comparison to the whole group where it belongs.

X + be + “the” + SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVE

SHORT ADJECTIVES (1 syllable) LONG ADJECTIVES (2 or more syllables) IRREGULAR ADJECTIVES

1. Add -est to the adjective: Add “the most” before the adjective: There are three adjectives which do not change
- cold → the coldest (el más frío) - bored → the most bored (el más aburrido) according to the other two rules. These are:
- high → the highest (el más alto) - dangerous → the most dangerous (el más
peligroso) 1. good (bueno) → the best (el mejor)
- nice → the nicest (el más lindo)
- beautiful → the most beautiful (el más e.g.: Rome is the best Italian city.
e.g.: This is the highest mountain. hermoso)
2. bad (malo) → the worst (el peor)
e.g. Italy is the most dangerous country to drive a e.g.: Tom is the worst driver I know.
2. CVC: double consonant + -est

e.g.: Ushuaia is the furthest city in the world.

3. Adjectives ending in “y”: i + -est:


- dry→ the driest (el más seco)
- sunny → the sunniest (el más
soleado)

e.g.: Yesterday was the sunniest day of winter.
