WHAT YOU WILL NEED
A 3 mm crochet hook Synthetic stuffing
Cotton yarn for 3mm crochet hook in these colours : SKIN, LIGHT GREEN, DARK GREEN,
ORANGE and BROWN (1 ball of each colour)
A pair of 10 mm safety eyes
A piece of black felt (10 x 10 cm)

BEFORE STARTING
Make sure to crochet tight enough; otherwise little holes will appear after stuffing and you'll
see white polyester fibres. If you crochet too loose, use a smaller crochet, from one half to one
lower number.
The crochet number is indicative : you totally can use another crochet hook, as long as you use
a matching yarn ; Jack will simply be smaller or bigger (think then to adapt the size of the
eyes).
I worked with SUNNY from CHEVAL BLANC in 180 (Chamallow), 166 (Anis) et 271 (Orange),
with PHIL COTON 3 from PHILDAR in GOLF, and with ESTEREL from PINGOUIN in Ebony. With
these yarns, Jack measures 16 cm, from feet to head, 20 cm when he wears his pumpkin.

ABBREVIATIONS / SYMBOLS
ch : chain / inc : 2 sc in one stitch / FLO : front loop only
sl st : slip stitch / dec : invisible decrease (see Technical Points) BLO : back loop only
sc : single crochet / R : round
hdc : half double crochet / dc : double crochet /

The colours' changes are indicated in UPPERCASE

Some steps are written in bold and surrounded by ! : those steps are the one you mustn't
forget before closing the element (like the stuffing or the eyes) because you won't be able to
add it later.

Put the hair upside down on the head (the wrong side must face outwards), and place the
magic ring of the hair right above the magic ring of the head. Pin it.

Place the L1 and L15 right above the left* and right* ears respectively. Pin them.

Then spread the hair of the neck so that we don't see any more skin. Pin each lock.

On the face, place the sideburns (L26 and L16) against the ears. Pin them.

Then allocate every lock of the bangs (L17 to L25), folding the locks 18 to 25 in 2 before
pinning them. Leave the lock 17 sticking up.

When you're satisfied with the hairdressing, sew or glue the hair as you pinned it.

Place the L1 right above the left ear Place the L15 right above the right ear

Close with a sl st, then cut the yarn, leaving enough length to sew it later.

Put the stem on the top of the pumpkin. Pin every chain loop of the last round (R10), by
aligning them with the hollow parts of the pumpkin. Sew or glue the stem as you pinned it.

In a black felt square, cut the following pieces. Pin them to create the face of the pumpkin, then
sew or glue them.

You just finished you little Jack O'Lantern. Now,
you only have to relax and admire your wonderful

"But, where does our little Jack come from?" From the legend of
Jack Stingy ! "Jack who ?" How, you don't know this Irish tale?
Then let me tell it to you...

Jack Stingy was a rich and selfish man who lived long time ago
in Ireland. Loving to drink alcohol, he saw one day, in his favorite
pub, Satan in person. The Devil offered to buy Jack's soul.

Jack agreed, asking the Devil to pay him a last drink in return.
Satan did so, turning himself into a coin. But our little Jack, If you make this little Jack, don’t
instead of spending it as agreed, put the coin in his pocket and

He again agreed to sell his soul to the Devil, for one last apple.
Satan climbed the tree, while Jack drew a cross on the trunk.
Once again, the Devil was stuck.

This time Jack asked the Devil to never take his soul. Once the
deal was concluded, the Devil returned in Hell.

But when it was time for Jack's departure, his soul came to
Paradise; and in view of his sad sinful life, he was driven out.
Arrived in Hell, he found Satan, glad to present him again the
contract they had passed: he would never take his soul. Jack
could not go to Hell.
Instead, the Devil offered him an ember to guide him between
the world of the Living and the Dead, this in-between where he
would now be condemned to wander for eternity.

To protect the ember, Jack dug a turnip inside which he

deposited it. It is said that since these immemorial times, Jack
returns to Halloween each year to haunt the living, determined to
dissuade him by placing around their homes lanterns carved in
turnips ...
