I.Flavoring agents are the largest class of food additives. Each ester listed here is a synthetic flavor additive,
with a flavor very close to the natural flavor. While these esters are the major components of the natural
flavors, each natural flavor contains many more components. Write the equation( formula & word) for the
formation of the following esters.
EXAMPLE: Formation of ethyl formate (rhum)
IUPAC ethanol + methanoic acid → ethyl methanoate + water
CN ethyl alcohol + formic acid → ethyl formate + water

CH3CH2-OH + H-C-OH → H-C-O-CH2CH3 + H2O

1.octyl ethanoate ( orange)

IUPAC: acetic acid + octyl alcohol  octyl acetate + water

CN: acetic acid + octyl alcohol  octyl acetate + water

H 3C OH + HO(CH3)7CH4  H 3C O – CH2

2. ethyl butanoate ( pineapple)

IUPAC: ethanol + butanoic acid  ethyl butanoate + water

CN: ethyl alcohol + butyric acid  ethyl butyrate + water
