1 Clutch

2 Clutch cylinder

3 CVU (Clutch Valve Unit)

4 TECU (Transmission Electronic Control Unit)

The clutch is a dry, single disc, push type. It is controlled by the TECU via the clutch valve unit, and
enables gear shifting by disengaging the engine from the gearbox. The clutch also evens out
variations in the engine torque.

2 Hub

3 Lining

4 Frictional element

5 Steel segment

The clutch disc comprises a steel disc (5) with linings on both sides, shock absorbing springs and a
hub.
The steel segment (5) is connected to the hub with frictional element (4) and shock absorbing springs
to dampen the pulsating torque delivered by the engine.
The hub is splined and can therefore move back and forth on the input shaft.

Spring straps

Overview

1 Clutch cover attachment.

2 Spring strap.

3 Pressure plate attachment.

The spring straps (2) allow the pressure plate to move axially. They also transfer torque to the
pressure plate and facilitate the separation of the pressure plate from the clutch disc during clutch
disengagement.

1 Clutch cylinder sensor connection

2 Air out - to the clutch cylinder

3 Air valve membrane

4 Air in - from the air tank

5 GCU (Gearbox Control Unit) connection

The clutch valve unit controls the airflow to and from the clutch cylinder, which operates the clutch.
The unit is controlled by the TECU on the gearbox. There are four valves in the unit, two for
disengagement and two for engagement of the clutch. The clutch valve unit also transfers signals
from the clutch cylinder position sensor to the TECU.

4 Air supply tank via GCU

5 Valve Air Slow Engagement (VASE)

6 Valve Air Slow Disengagement (VASD)

7 Valve Air Fast Engagement (VAFE)

8 Valve Air Fast Disengagement (VAFD)

The clutch valve unit receives compressed air from the air supply tank (4). There are four valves that
control the disengagement and engagement of the clutch. Valves (6) and (8) let the air in to
disengage the clutch. Valve (6) is for slow disengagement and Valve (8) is for fast disengagement.
Valves (5) and (7) let the air out to engage the clutch. Valve (5) is for slow engagement and valve (7)
is for fast engagement.

1 TECU

2 CVU

3 Clutch cylinder

4 Clutch

The TECU (1) controls the valves in the clutch valve unit (2), which pneumatically operates the clutch
cylinder (3). This, in turn, operates the clutch (4), which disengages the engine from the gearbox to
allow gear shifting.

When the chamber (1) is vented, the piston (2) is pushed back into the chamber by the centre section
of the diaphragm spring (3) , and the circumference of the diaphragm spring presses the pressure
plate (4) against the clutch disc, making it engage with the flywheel.

When the chamber (1) is pressurized, the piston (2) pushes the centre of the diaphragm spring (3)
towards the flywheel, and the circumference away from the flywheel, releasing the pressure plate (4)
and disengaging the clutch plate from the flywheel.
