Unit 16 Engineering Drawing for

Technicians 20792C
Task 5 (This provides evidence for D1)

Evaluate the different methods of drawing you have used on this course and their effectiveness.
Explain the different options of presenting drawings available, particularly with reference to the
design cycle in the engineering industry.

The design cycle is a cycle which engineers use to create and produce a product. There are lots of
different steps which takes place.

First Step

Firstly the engineers will plan the measurements and design of the component; they will do this by
producing sketches of the component, so that they have a brief idea of the component they will
produce. They will sketches so that they can show their customers how the component will look and
give their customer a brief idea as well how the component will look.

Second Step

The engineer will then produce an orthographic drawing which is a 2D drawing of the component,
they will do this so that they can show the manufacturer how the component will look, and this
drawing will be neat and accurate, so that the manufacturer will be able to take a lot of information
about the component by interpreting the drawing. The drawing produced will have a third and first
angle so that they can all positions of the component.

Third Step

The third step is for the engineer to produce a pictorial drawing of the component, this is done so
that the customer knows exactly how the component looks because the drawing is like a photo of
the component, if the customer has no engineering knowledge they will know how the component
looks and interpret from it easily.

Fourth Step

The engineer will produce an assembly drawing of the component; this is done so that the
manufacturer will see the component in a broken form so it has more detail to the component. Each
part of the component will be drawn separately, so that the manufacturer will pay attention so each
part of the component, the assembly drawing is drawn so that the parts of the components fit
perfectly to each other.

Fifth Step

The last step is to produce the drawing on a CAD system; this is done so that the engineer can make
copies of the drawing multiple times without just drawing it by hand. By doing it on the CAD system
it will speed up the process and save the engineer time. All the different types of drawings can be
saved in CAD so it will make it easier for the engineer. Also if customers ask for previous drawings of
components the engineer won’t need to draw it again as it has been saved into the CAD system.
However, this is a very expensive step as CAD systems are very expensive.
