SECTION –1

1. Chapter IX of SOLAS ’74 is titled “Management for the safe operation of Ships”, Which
code has been developed to cover these requirements.
State the principle elements of this code and name the Certificates/ Documents issued
under this code.

2. IMO is planning to adopt a new instrument “For the control and Management of Ships
Ballast Water and Sediments” in the near future. In relation to this discuss the following;
a) Core issues finalized at the recently concluded conference.
b) Option for treatment of Ballast Water for rendering it safe for pumping out
c) Criteria for such Control measures.

3. With reference to free fall boats, state the special features of the boat and explain with
sketches
a) The means of launching
b) The constructional features by virtue of which it can with stand the impact. when
released.

4. Which of the following gases represent the greatest threat to personnel safety in an engine
room where the exhaust is leaking from a Diesel engine.

b) Carbon trioxide (d) Hydrogen sulphide
Justify your answer.

5. Consideration has been given to running diesel machinery unattended at night. Describe
the modifications and additional apparatus, which would be necessary before this could be
achieved with reasonable safety.

6. State some typical precautions you would take before going on to inspect the exhaust gas
economizer.

7. Ships are provided with an independent diesel or electric or air operated emergency fire
pump.
a) State three areas in which emergency fire pump are commonly installed and give
reasons why?
b) Describe with aid of a simple sketch an air pump or primer used to initiate suction when
the fire pump is situated above sea water level. What suction lift would you expect from
a single stage pump system.
c) State the water jet capacity the pump must be capable of.
d) State how it can be ensured that the fire pump is kept in good working order.
e) State what precaution must be taken in sub-zero temperatures.
f) Using a simple sketch describe with reasons, how the emergency fire pump is connected
to the ship’s fire main showing position of any isolated valves fitted and location of
international shore connection.

8. Sketch and describe the construction and operation of an enclosed life boat winch with
self-release mechanism.

9. What are the core features of the Ballast water management and sedimentation scheme?
Suggest some measures by which ballast water pollution can be avoided.
