LESSON

Art Movement and Styles: Media Arts

Filipino contemporary artists have been the prime movers in initiating,
innovating, entertaining, promoting and giving birth to the new forms of arts
in our land and even to the world. Through the onset of technology to the
Philippines, Filipinos started to flourish their media art skills through the
aid of digital art, photography, and film productions. Media arts is also used
to promote, to entertain, to protest or express their feelings of our society on
education, governance, politics, economy, culture, human rights, religion,
global concerns and many others. According to Eric Roca- an artist claimed
that “art is also used not just for aesthetics and entertainment but also to
bring awareness”.

The gradual movement of media arts in the Philippines speaks loud to

where the Philippines is heading to. Media arts is another art form that risen
to a broader horizon of Philippine arts in the digital age of technology. The
strength of this medium creates a new art form which is a powerful social
and economic force, and a legacy of the 20th century to the world. The
movement of media arts in our country is categorized into cinematography,
animation, printed media and digital media. Each category has its own
evolving movement and development as well.

I.CINEMATOGRAPHY

Cinematography is an art of film camera work where actors express

themselves without the exaggerated facial expressions and gestures. This
became a powerful tool of showcasing talents, feelings, ideas and stories of
various essential subjects.

The origin of the media and cinematic arts in the Philippines has
started in 1897 upon the introduction of motion pictures in Metro Manila.
Filipinos aided foreign filmmakers in the Philippines until in 1919 then José
Nepomuceno made the first ever Filipino film- “Dalagang Bukid”. By the
1930s, the formative years of Filipino cinema began as interest in film genre
as art began among the common folk where theatre became an important
influence to the popularity of cinema in the Philippines. The 1940s created
films that depicted the real stories of the people during World War II.

Golden Age of Philippine Cinema

The year 1950 was known as the first golden age of Philippine cinema
because the Filipino film industry was one of the busiest and bustling film
communities in Asia, producing an average of 350 films per year making
Philippines second to Japan in terms of film productions a year. Such count
became possible through the four big production studios which are the LVN
Pictures, Sampaguita Pictures, Premiere Productions and Lebran
International. Philippines were at peak in filmmaking with premier directors
like Gerardo de León, Eddie Romero and César Gallardo as well as the
biggest stars of that period. Famous Actors of the Golden Cinema were
Fernando Poe Jr., Susan Roces, Amalia Fuentes and Romano Castellvi.

Experimental Cinema

From the 1970s to 1980's, the golden age of cinema met the turbulent
years due to the dictatorship. The films under the period were overseen by
the government, with various filmmakers being arrested. A remarkable film
made during the period was Himala, which tells the concept of miracles
through religious fanaticism. The period after martial rule dealt with more
serious topics, with independent films being made by many filmmakers.

The emergence of Western film influence has started in 1990’s and mostly
focusing on the realities of poverty. The direst films produced that time are
Manila in the Claws of Light, The Flor Contemplacion Story, Oro,
Plata, Mata, and Sa Pusod ng Dagat. Cinema in 21st century Philippines
was a glowing success on the revival of popular films produced by
filmmakers dealing with the theme on human equality, concepts of poverty,
self-love, and historical narratives.
Indie Films
Indie films is a shortened name for Philippine Independent Films. It is
often viewed as “highly intellectual” or “pretentious” for its depth, substance
and ambiguity. It is all about where people wanted to see something darker,
or some themes depict about escape. The indie films provide fresh content,
with much freedom and closer to fans featured contents or themes.
Brillante Mendoza is a notable director for Indie films who succesfully
directed 16 films since 2005. His award-winning films awards are
Masahista, Tirador, Serbis, Kinatay, Thy Womb. He was then awarded by
the French government the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters for his
great contributions in world cinema

Mainstream Films

Mainstream film was all about love teams. It has big production
values, distributes to a larger audience, artists can be known worldwide and
has merchandise to promote the movie or show.

Commercial Renaissance
This period of cinematography became highly commercialized and
progressive in full scale. In the year 2009, films in the Philippine Box Office
has surged, with You Changed My Life starring Sarah Geronimo and John
Lloyd Cruz earned ₱230 million, making it the first Filipino movies to
achieve the 200 million pesos range. This started the commercial box office
success trend in the Philippine Cinema. In 2011 is the most productive film
shows of Philippine Cinema history as 3 of its films (all from Star Cinema)
landed in the top 3 of the highest grossing Filipino Film of All-Time. Vice
Ganda's The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin grossed ₱331.6 million in
box office and became the highest grossing local film in the Philippines, No
Other Woman generated ₱278.39 million while Enteng Ng Ina Mo, has a
total income of ₱237.89 million.

The movement of Philippine Cinematography became interesting

when competition of film productions started and quality of media arts were
further improved. The gradual development and improvement of
cinematography in the Philippines become widely pronounced when Filipino
filmmakers generated millions of income and garnered recognitions from the
world class award-winning organizations.

Along the continued innovation and improvement of film productions,

the transformations of film styles likewise continue. Some genre that has
been produced before that remained common and visible until these days
are:
1. Silent Films 9. Westerns or “Cowboy Movie
2. “Slapstick Comedy” Films 10. Thrillers or Suspense Films
3. Gangster Movie Genre Horror 11. Historical or Biographical Films
4. Fantasy Films 12.Film Adaptations of Literary Classics

5. Animated Feature Films 13. Futuristic or Science Fiction Films

6. Movie Musical 14. Special Effects Movies
7. War Films 15. Disaster Films
8. Film Epics 16. Special Effects Movies

II.ANIMATION

Aside from actual body shoots to the actors for film making, animation
has also risen. Animation is done by creating a series of drawings that make
it appears continuously moving. Animahenasyon was launched serving as
annual festival and for competition featuring the creative works of Filipino
animators. The Animation Council of the Philippines Inc. is an organization
that aimed to create an identity for the Philippines within the animation
industry which then became one of the preferred sources for animation
services worldwide. In 1991, Philippine Animation Studio Inc. was
stablished and collaborated on numerous animation projects and series with
foreign partners such as Captain Flamingo, Groove High, Producing Parker
and Space Heroes Universe.

1. Urduja (2008) - an animated film adaptation of the legend of the

warrior princess of Pangasinan was the first fully animated Filipino
film made by all Filipino animators using the traditional hand-drawn
animation process with specialized 3D effects.
2. Dayo: Sa Mundo ng Elementalia (2008) is another animated film
but this is the Country’s first all-digital full-length animated feature
film and the first ever animated movie to be screened during 34th
MMFF in 2008.
3. RPG Metanoia (2010) is another animated Filipino film-a full 3D
animated film.

III.PRINT MEDIA

Print media is a conventional form of arts characterized with

sophisticated designs, styles, formats and quality which are used for
advertisement, comic books, book designs and illustration purposes.

1. Advertising
Despite of the trending popularity and accessibility of online
advertising on social media platforms, Philippine artists are still called and
remained in demand to create advertisements intended for physical prints.
Print media is still strong for promotional and commercial purposes.

2. Comic Books
Another field of print media that highlights the distinct creativity of
Filipinos is that of comic books which continue to prosper in our society.
Our very own Tony Velasquez, “Father of Filipino Comics”, his comic work
was first featured in the Liwayway Magazine. The proliferation of local
comics was clearly influenced by U. S comics with superheroes as the main
characters. Comics became a major form of reading material around the
country avidly read and shared by young and elders.

3. Book Design and Illustration

Another common form of printed media is a book design and
illustration where Filipino artists have been given the great opportunity to
showcase their talent, creativity and professionalism they deserve. Some of
the notable publication includes the Philippine Book Publishers, Bookmark,
Anvil Publishing, Adarna Books, and Ilaw ng Tahanan Publishing.
IV. DIGITAL MEDIA

The printed books, comics, and others are gradually converted into
digital format. With the presence of technology in the country, digital media
has started to rise and become useful. With the integration of arts, the
printed books, comics, and others were gradually converted into digital
format. Several books online or e-book are now interactive, accessible and
efficient to every user. New books are now conceptualized, written, designed
and illustrated to online media and examples of these are the E-books,
Wattpad, Flip reads, Kobo, etc. Nowadays where online education,
marketing, trading and entertainment are made virtually, digital media
becomes more essential in demand and significant to the times. Today as we
embrace the age of technology, art remains to be present and absolutely
inseparable to all sorts of platforms.
