K1 and K3 Clutches Hard to Separate
Audi and VW models with 01M transmissions built after April 14, 1997 must have the K1 clutch pressed
apart from the K3 clutch assembly. Use the following illustrations to service the clutch assemblies. The factory
tool numbers are listed in the figures should be used where possible.

Step 1 Support the outer shell of the K1 and press
turbine shaft out. Hold turbine shaft to prevent it
dropping.

Step 2 Coat O-ring and splines with VW ATF.

Step 3 Install turbine shaft into K1 1

drum. If splines are visible as in Fig. 3a,
continue to Step 4 to press assembly
together. If no splines are visible in Fig.
3b, assembly is ready for installation.

Step 5 Place K1 and K3 assemblies with support tools in

press. Make sure tool VW418A is aligned with needle
bearing surface.
