Lesson Plans

Subject: Social Studies

Class: VI
Duration: 40 minutes
Number of periods: 05
Discipline: Geography
Topic: Layers of Earth
Planned by: Ms. Urooj Fatima and Marium Ishaque
Objectives:
By the end of this session students will be able to:
 Describe the three layers of Earth (crust, mantle, core, lithosphere and asthenosphere).
 Describe the composition, thickness, temperature and the state of each layer.
 Explain the plate tectonic theory and locate the tectonic plates and their movements on map.
 Explain the movement of plates.(convergent, divergent, conservative)
 Describe geologic events that happen due to movements of tectonic plates.
Procedure Time Resources

Day 1: 10
minutes
Motivation :
Ask the following questions.

 Which planet do we live on?

 What part of the Earth we live on?
 What do you think what is inside the Earth?
 What comes out of volcano when it erupts?
 What do you think is the temperature inside higher than temperature on
the surface of the Earth?
Let’s learn more about how the Earth is from inside.
● Introduce the topic ‘Layers Of Earth’
Ask students to write down what they want to learn about how Earth is from
inside.
Development :

 Give students the worksheet: The layers of Earth, students complete the
task while or after watching the video.
 Show the following video on LED.

 Take feedback on the video by asking the following questions. minutes
a. What is the outermost layer of Earth?
b. Which is the second layer after the crust?
c. What makes up the mantle?
d. What layer comes next after the mantle?
e. What is the innermost layer of Earth?
f. Which core is in liquid state and which one solid?
g. Which layer of the Earth is the hottest? Why?

Day 2: 40
minutes
Illustrating Layers of Earth through egg/ apple dissection

 Make 7 groups of four students.

 Students dissect an egg/apple and compare it to the layers of the Earth.
1. Peel the shell of the egg off.
What layer of the Earth the egg shell represent?
2. Cut through the egg white until reach the yellow portion.
What layer of the Earth the egg white represent?
3. What layer of the Earth does the yellow portion at the center of the egg
represent?
 They write down their observation.

Groups share their observations with the class

Day 3:
Motivation

 Video: Structure of the Earth| the Dr. Bincos show 10

 Ask students the following questions: minutes
a) What is the crust made up of?
b) Which layer is hottest?
c) Which is the thinnest and outermost layer of Earth?
Development:

 Make 5-6 groups of 4 students and provide 4 jumbled cards of different Game cards
layers to each student.
 Write down instructions on the board.
20
Instructions: minutes
Pass the cards to your partners and complete a set of 4 cards with the same
picture on the top corner of each card. Each set of four cards represents a
layer of earth. Play the game twice.
Evaluation:
1. Fill the given chart using the game cards.

Day 4: 15 Jigsaw
minutes puzzle sheet
Motivation:

 Provide tectonic plates jigsaw puzzle sheet to students.

 Ask them to cut the parts and arrange to solve the puzzle.

Development :

 Share the fact that the lithosphere the outer part of the Earth is broken
into large pieces like the jigsaw puzzle which are called tectonic plates. 15
 Introduce the sub topic ‘Tectonic Plates’ minutes
 Show video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVn04eJRjV4) Video
 Ask the following questions.

1. What is tectonic plate?

2. How do they occur?

 Ask students to look whether they arranged the tectonic plates puzzle
they properly, rearrange if needed then paste in copy.
Evaluation

 Arrange and paste tectonic plates puzzle

 Show the movement direction of the tectonic plates with arrows.
 Name the plate boundary that lies under Karachi or Pakistan.

minutes
Day 5: 5 minutes
Motivation:

 Ask the following questions.

a) Are tectonic plates moving? Why?
b) Have you ever noticed earthquakes, or volcanic eruptions?
c) Why do they occur?
Development :

 Explain that plate tectonics, Earth’s outermost layer, or lithosphere—

made up of the crust and upper mantle—is broken into large rocky

plates. These plates lie on top of a partially molten layer of rock called
minutes
the asthenosphere. Due to the convection of the asthenosphere and
lithosphere, the plates move relative to each other.
 Share the following table with students.

 Show the following video to students about the tectonic plates.

 Ask students to watch the video.

 Show the video second time and ask them to fill the chart while watching
the video.
Evaluation

 Fill the chart about tectonic plate boundaries, their movement and
effects.
 Take feedback by asking questions.
