GENERAL

• Fixed surfaces that help stabilize the


aircraft in flight are known as
STABILIZERS. On most aircraft designs
these consist of a horizontal stabilizer
and a vertical stabilizer located at the
-

aft end of the fuselage known as the


empennage.
• The stabilizers and control surfaces of an
airplane are constructed in a manner
similar to the wing out on a much
smaller scale. They usually include one
or more main longitudinal members
(spars) and ribs.

STABILIZERS CONSTRUCTION

• The construction of stabilizers surfaces is


similar to those found in a wing, using
spars, ribs, stringers, and skin.
• They perform the same functions
shaping and supporting the stabilizer
and transferring stresses.

HORIZONTAL STABILIZERS CONSTRUCTION

The Trimmable Horizontal Stabilizer (THS) main structure includes:


• - the spar boxes (Center, LH side and RH side),
• - the leading edge,
• - the trailing edge, and
• - the attachment fittings.

• The leading edge has an aerodynamic

component, which includes an upper
and lower panels, and a leading edge
nose plate.

• The horizontal stabilizer aprons
have an aerodynamic seal
between the horizontal
stabilizer and the fuselage.
• -The aprons are made of CFRP.

• the spar box,
• the leading edge,
• the trailing edge,
• the tip,

• The leading edge sections are made of
Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP)
sandwich construction.
