Unit Summary: This unit is an exploration of the impact of immigration on New Jersey and the nation
The focus of the unit is a study of the personal challenges that immigrants faced as they made thE
decision to come to America. The scope of the unit is: 1) Making the decision to immigrate 2) ThE
journey to America 3) The arrival process at Ellis Island. Additionally, the unit will explore thE
cultural impact that immigrants have had on America over time. In this unit, the students wil
understand how various groups with different cultural backgrounds interacted over time for commo1
goals. They will learn that it took great strength and resiliency to adapt to their new environment.
