WHAT IS WHITE HAZE?

First presented in GPD 2023

GLASS PERFORMANCE DAYS, JUNE 14-16, 2023, TAMPERE, FINLAND

WHAT IS WHITE HAZE?

• Foggy areas or repetitive
stripes on glass surface

• Phenomenon with no
official standards

First presented in GPD 2023

White haze – why after tempering?

Heat expansion causes glass to
bow

When glass bows the surface

stress is focused in certain areas
and these areas will react with
dust / chemicals showing haze on
the surface.

Probably the most difficult quality issue to solve

• Multiple potential root causes

• Difficult to detect consistently

• Often only detected in the final

installation location

Key findings after initial prototypes

a) standard lighting setup is not sufficient

b) special type of dark field illumination

c) resolution of 200dpi provides reliable results

d) wave length of <400nm isn‘t benefitial

Desired setup

1. CMOS based imaging sensor

2. Rod lens series

3. LED light source with attachement lens

4. Glass with partial white haze area

5. absorber surface
