Soil
Soil may be defined as a dynamic natural body on the surface of earth
in which plants grow. It is composed of minerals organic and inorganic
materials.
Factors affecting Soil formation
2. Clay Soils – The Soils are in clay particles are called clay soil. These
particles are of smaller size and hence contais lesser amount of air .
These have a greater water holding capacity. The clay soils are also
called heavy soils.
3. Loam Soils – Medium textured soils are called loam soil. These are
made up of mixture particles of sand clay and silt. These are best
suitable for cultivation as these have an optimum water holding
capacity.
Different type of soil found in India
• Alluvial Soils – These are formed by deposition of sediments by rivers.
These are rich in humus and very fertile. These are found in almost
45% of the country’s area including Punjab Haryana Uttar Pradesh
Bihar and Gujarat. These are best suited for growing rice maize
sugarcane cotton etc.
• Desert soils – These are found in Rajasthan and its adjoining parts of
Punjab and Haryana. Wheat maize Barley and cotton are mainly
grown in these soils.
Punjab can be divided broadly into three different zones
on the basis of soil types
1. Southern – Western Punjab – This region covers the distance of
Fazilka Muktsar Sahib Bathinda Mansa and some parts of Ferozepur.
Soils of this zone are mainly Sandy soils. These are low in nitrogen
Phosphorus and Potash. Wheat rice and cotton are the main crops
