1. GENERAL
1.1. Scope

This specification indicates the exterior heat insulation materials and their application for
pipe, apparatus, and equipment for the project Early Production Facilities - CNQ-26 La
Calera.

1.2. Items Insulated

The pipelines, instruments, apparatus, and equipment to be insulated are defined in the
corresponding Equipment, Line and Instrument Lists and Equipment Drawings.

1.3. Purpose

Heat insulation serves three main purposes:

 Heat conservation;
 Temperature control;
 Personnel protection.

The temperature used to determine the need for insulation and the insulation thickness is
the normal operating fluid temperature, with two exceptions:

 When piping or apparatus has internal insulation or refractory lining, no external

insulation shall be used unless specifically indicated on the fabrication drawings.
 When personnel are normally near piping or equipment during a short term high
temperature condition, such as at start-up vents, that temperature shall be considered.

1.4. Glossary

Vendor: any person or company that is responsible for the whole provision and issue of
purchase orders to Suppliers.
Supplier: manufacturer of main equipment and / or system components.
Purchaser: Client or company defined by Client.
Owner Engineer: any person or company that is responsible of receiving, controlling,
commenting and approving Supplier’s documents. They are also responsible of the follow
up and inspection of the Supplier purchasing and fabrication activities. This function could
be covered by a third party or by the Client itself.
Client: Pluspetrol.
QA/QC: Quality Assurance / Quality Control.

1.5. Exceptions to Specifications

All deviations from the requirements of the data sheets, this specification and its referenced
documents shall be stated in the tender. The absence of such a statement shall imply full
compliance.

Any deviation from this specification requires Client approval.

ASTM C 168 Standard Terminology relating to thermal insulating
ASTM C 461 Standard test method for mastics and coating with thermal insulation
ASTM C 518 Heat flow meter test
ASTM C 547 Standard Specification for mineral fiber preformed pipe insulation
ASTM-C592 Mineral Fibre Blanket Insulation and Blanket Type Pipe insulation
ASTM C 687 Thermal resistance

ASTM E 84 Standard test method for burning characteristics of building materials
ASTM E 96 Test Method for Water Vapour Transmission of Materials

2. DESIGN

2.1. Heat Conservation

Temperatures of 65ºC or greater justify the need for heat conservation insulation. Table 1
gives the insulation thickness for this purpose.

Vessels and its supports shall be insulated considering the following:

 Hot service vessels with skirts: skirt shall be internally and externally insulated, at
least 600 mm bellow vessel tangent line, except that skirt and vessel head internal
diameter are lower than 1200 mm.
 To hold the insulation, additional supports will be installed as necessary.
 Insulation expansion joints will be added, in case it is required.

2.2. Temperature Control

In some cases piping or apparatus operating in the 30ºC to 65ºC range will require insulation
for close process temperature control. In these cases the insulation thickness shall be
calculated for the specific application.

Pipes with tracing will be completely insulated even flanged valves and fittings.

2.3. Personnel Protection

All accessible piping, apparatus, and equipment operating at temperatures above 65°C, and
not provided with heat conservation insulation, shall be insulated for personnel protection
Insulation for personnel protection shall extend a minimum of 2.1 meters above and 1 meter
horizontally from any operating walkway or platform.
The insulation thicknesses for personnel protection are given in Table 1.

Expanded metal guards shall be used in lieu of personnel protection insulation for
components designed on the basis of reduced metal temperature due to heat loss or if the
piping or equipment is internally insulated or refractory lined. The items that are covered
with metal guards will be identified on piping drawings. These guards will be specified and
provided by other than the insulation contractor.
Physical barriers such as open mesh guards, protective screens or hand railings and hazard
markings may be used instead of insulation where indicated.
Do not insulate coolers, condensers, hot pump cases, or instruments for personnel
protection. Equipment such as vertical vessels, and condensers may be partially insulated
if temperatures during normal operation and access cause them to be an unusually severe
hazard. Some of these may require expanded-metal guards instead of insulation when it is
desirable to dissipate heat.

2.4. Surfaces Not Insulated

The following items do not require heat insulation:

 Compressors.
 Manhole covers.
 Handholes.
 Equipment nozzles.
 Exchanger shell flanges and channels with flanged covers.
 Components which are insulated internally to protect the shell material from high internal
temperatures.
 Drains to sewer.
 Expansion joints.
 Nameplates.
 Safety valves.
 Vent lines normally out of service.
 Dielectric joint.

3. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

 Before installing insulation, the surface shall be treated as specified in document

GRAL-100-ET-X-002 Rev. 2 (Especificación Técnica de Pinturas y Revestimientos).
 No insulating material will be applied on wet surfaces.
 The insulation will be installed once the pneumatic and hydraulic tests have been
carried out. The application of insulation may be started once the systems are
released for insulation. This means that testing, painting and electrical/steam tracing
(if applicable) have been completed.
 The insulation will be installed taking into account the appropriate tolerances to
absorb thermal expansion.
 All openings in the insulation around connections, manholes, support, etc. shall be
filled with paste of insulating material.
 Insulation sections shall be fixed by means of galvanized wire not lower than 1 mm.
 Over the insulation material a layer of waterproofing compound (asphalt emulsion or
similar) shall be applied.
 In places where there is no continuity of insulation, the tightness in the finishing will
be ensured by applying sealing compound. There shall be no gaps.

 The insulations material will be protected from weather with a smooth aluminum
cover, of the following thickness:
o Pipes: 0.4 mm (up to pipe diameter equal to 4 "), 0.6 mm (for pipe diameter
greater than 4").
o Vessels: 1 mm.

 Aluminum covers with appropriate shapes will be placed, secured with Parker screws.
 The unions of aluminum covers shall have an overlap with tabs, in order to avoid
water entry. This unions in horizontal sections shall be arranged in the lower part in
such a way to avoid the direct projection of rain on the joint.
 The aluminum cover will be sealed when the overlap is not possible, to prevent water
entry to the insulation.
 The outside of vessel heads shall be insulated in the same way as the cylindrical part,
using segments of aluminum sheet for protecting insulation material.
 The insulation materials and their weather protection shall be installed so that water
does not enter into the insulation material or between the insulation and the
pipe/equipment surface during their service life.

4. INSULATION MATERIALS

Process equipment (eg. vessels, columns, heat exchangers) shall generally be insulated
with mineral wool. Mineral wool thermal conductivity shall be lower than 0.0465 W/m °K @
100°C.

Piping shall generally by insulated with both mineral wool and expanded perlite. Thermal
conductivity shall be lower than 0.0465 W/m °K @ 100°C for mineral wool and 0.1 W/m °K
@ 100°C for expanded perlite.

All insulating materials, insulating cements, and mastics must have a method of indicating
that they are asbestos free.

4.1. Substitute Materials

The use of substitute materials requires Client approval.
