1. PLANNING INFORMATION
A. Effectivity
The high pressure turbine (HPT) rotor blades P/N 1957M10P01, P/N 1957M10P03,
P/N 1957M10P04, P/N 2100M96P02, P/N 2100M96P03, P/N 2100M96P04, P/N
2100M96P05, P/N 2403M91P02, P/N 2403M91P03, P/N 2403M91P04, and P/N
2403M91P05 are affected by this Service Bulletin.
B. Description
This Service Bulletin provides recommended removal times for specific HPT rotor
blade part numbers as specified in the Table below:
C. Compliance
Category 4
CFM recommends that you do this Service Bulletin when the HPT module is
exposed.
Impact B
This Service Bulletin is offered to improve the reliability or performance of your CFM
product, or to help prevent the occurrence of the event or condition described in this
Service Bulletin. If the operator elects not to participate in the bulletin, that decision
will be taken into consideration by CFM in evaluating future product performance
issues that may arise in the operator’s fleet.
D. Concurrent Requirements
None.
E. Reason
(1) Objective:
To remove certain HPT rotor blade part numbers from service to improve
engine reliability and reduce the number of under platform separation
significant events.
(2) Condition:
For all HPT rotor blade part numbers listed in paragraph 1.A., Effectivity, the
CFM fleet has experienced 15 below platform HPT rotor blade separation
events associated with cracking that initiated on the concave side of the
upper dovetail pressure face of the HPT rotor blade shank. In addition, the
CFM fleet has experienced five below platform HPT rotor blade separation
events associated with cracking at the “min-neck” dovetail location and nine
below platform HPT rotor blade separation events associated with cracking
internally at the transition zone location. Two of these events were a result
of separations of the HPT rotor blades being operated past these published
removal thresholds. Each of these separations led to an operational event.
For the population of HPT rotor blades identified in Table 1 in paragraph 4.,
APPENDIX A of this Service Bulletin, the CFM fleet has experienced six HPT
rotor blade liberation events due to transition zone cracking. These liberations
occurred on HPT rotor blades that had accumulated from 15,600 to 17,700
CSN. In all the events, the liberated HPT rotor blades did not have aluminide
coating on the forward internal cavity of the shank. CFM has conducted a
field sampling plan and has identified that this cracking in the HPT rotor
blade shank occurs most predominantly in the population of HPT rotor blades
identified in Table 1 of paragraph 4., APPENDIX A.
The CFM fleet has experienced separations below the platform on the HPT
rotor blades P/N 2100M96P02, P/N 2100M96P03, and P/N 2403M91P02,
leading to operational events. Replacement thresholds are published to help
operators manage these and other similar HPT rotor blades, so that the HPT
rotor blades operate within their optimal cyclic range.
(3) Cause:
For all HPT rotor blade part numbers listed in paragraph 1.A., Effectivity. High
local stresses on the HPT rotor blade dovetail and shank surfaces can initiate
cracks that propagate in fatigue to failure.
For the population of HPT rotor blades identified in Table 1 of paragraph 4.,
APPENDIX A, high local mechanical and thermal stresses in the internal HPT
rotor blade cavity lead to fatigue cracking in the forward cavity transition zone
of the shank. For blades manufactured in a particular time period, there is an
absence of aluminide coating on this surface. This condition accelerates
fatigue crack initiation which leads to premature HPT rotor blade liberation.
