Proposed Title of Thesis

Iconoclastic Reading of Goethe's Faust

Statement of the Problem

As Faust has the burning desire for sex, wealth, knowledge and power, he

established a pact with devil Mephistopheles to sell his soul in order to fulfill them.

However he is doomed to never get satisfaction. So much so even after getting

married with Helen, the most beautiful lady, he is not fully satisfied. In his obsessive

quest for achieving supreme pleasure and happiness, he engulfed himself in the ocean

of sin, crime and trouble. Thus, he became spiritually corrupted, socially stigmatized

and morally degenerated.

Hypothesis

Goethe through Faust created the prototype of modern man corrupted by

civilization is an allegory of human life itself which dismantles the false pretension of

high morality by emphasizing on the new concept of freedom, materiality, secularity,

human potentiality and progress.

Literature Review

Faust has been analyzed from various perspectives: Feminist, Marxist,

Stylistic and Religious among the others. Charles Van Doren comments on the love

story of Faust and Gretchen as the challenge to the traditional religion. As he puts:

There were always courageous young women like Gretchen and

whether they knew it or not, they were always looking for a Faust, the

adventurous stranger who would come to town and leave it with the

village beauty, who might or might not survive, survival usually

depended on the man. As time went on there were more and more

Fausts and more and more Gretchen. Indeed more Americans were

descended from such persons. (238)

In the words of Tom Seller, The Faust motif provides an opportunity to explore the

spectrum of attitude among Christians towards science and technology by placing

them into a historic context. Depending on one's understanding of the relationship of

God and the world:

The example of Faust demonstrates that the Christian assessment of the

scientific enterprise in closely correlated to the level of doctrinaire

dualism. Informing the particular version of Christianity that inspires

the assessment, Goethe's interpretation represents a return to earlier

version of the story while some continue to accuse contemporary

Faustian of satanic connections for speaking forbidden knowledge and

daring to play God by manipulating the stuff of life. (166)

Similarly, next critic Jane V. Curren interprets the text from stylistic point of view. As

he remarks:

Faust is an original play in a modern language as it follows ancient

practices for the tragic stage, that is to say, the formal features the

structure of the whole and chorus division. Like the ancient tragedians

Goethe has repeated the myth of Helen. It is also clear that Goethe has

aimed at and succeeded both in encapsulating ancient dramatic form

and presenting Helen fittingly in accordance with ancient practices.

Another critic Richard Fridenthal analyzed the text as one of the world greatest

tragedy. In this regard, he points out:

Faust is to enter, a broader, higher, brighter world, where he is to gain

honour and riches and lead his life in more exalted regions. The

Goethic world disappears to make way for the Greek dream of the

Helena Mephistopheles is changed from the devil of popular tratond

into the companion and partner, or into the mere speaker who at time

even addresses the audience directly. The pact is often forgotten and

for a long time is completely abandoned. At times Gothe thinks of

calling his Helena, the central section of the secondary part, in

intermezzo to separate it from the context of the whole. (503)

Thus, it becomes clear that though the text has been analyzed through various

perspectives it has not yet been analyzed from Psychoanalytic, Foucauldian,

Existential and Cultural perspectives without which the proper study in this issue will

remain incomplete. Having taken this fact into consideration, the present researcher

proposes to carry out research from these perspectives.

Theoretical Methodology

Intensive study of the text will be the core point of this research. Basically,

Cultural Studies in terms of high renaissance period will be used as a theoretical tools.

In addition, internet, library consultation and related commentaries will be supportive

materials. Guidance from the professors and the lectures will be further inspiration to

bring this thesis into its complete shape. Tentative chapter division and allocation of

time for the dissertation will be as follows:

Chapter I: Introduction and Review of Literature (6 weeks approximately)

Chapter II: Discussion of Tools (8 weeks approximately)

Chapter III: Analysis of Text (9 weeks approximately)

Chapter IV: Conclusion (3 weeks approximately)
