WHAT IS AN
EARTHQUAKE?

An earthquake is a sudden shaking of the ground caused by

the movement of rocks deep underground. When these
rocks suddenly shift or break, they release energy that
causes the Earth's surface to vibrate.

This can result in buildings and other structures shaking and

sometimes even collapsing. Earthquakes can be very
powerful and can cause a lot of damage, but they are a
natural part of the Earth's processes. Scientists study
earthquakes to try to understand them better and to help
keep people safe.
WHAT CAUSES IT?

Seismic activity refers to the movement and

vibrations of the Earth's crust caused by natural
processes. This can include earthquakes, but also
other forms of ground movement such as volcanic
eruptions and landslides.

Seismic activity can be measured using devices

called seismometers, which can detect the
vibrations caused by these events.

Seismic activity is a natural phenomenon that has

been occurring on the Earth for millions of years,
and will continue to do so in the future.
WHAT
ARE IT’S
EFFECTS?

Earthquakes can have several effects on both the environment

and people. One of the main effects is the shaking of the
ground, which can cause buildings, bridges, and other
structures to collapse or be damaged. This can lead to injuries
and even loss of life.

Earthquakes can disrupt utilities such as electricity, water, and

gas, making it difficult for people to access basic necessities.
Finally, earthquakes can have long-term psychological effects
on individuals, causing fear and anxiety due to the
unpredictability and potential destruction they bring.
WHAT TO DO
DURING
EARTHQUAKE?
DROP to the ground;

take COVER by getting

under a sturdy table or other
piece of furniture;

and HOLD ON until the

shaking stops. If there is no a
table or desk near you, cover
your face and head with your
arms and crouch in an inside
corner of the building.
