NUMERICAL SHEET : FORCE AND LAWS OF MOTION

1. Determine the tensions T2 and T1 in the strings as shown in figure.

2. A uniform rope of length L, resting on frictionless horizontal surface is pulled at one end by a force F. Then find the tension T in
the rope at a distance from the end where the force F is applied.
3. The masses m1, m2 and m3 of the three bodies shown are 5 kg, 2 kg and 3 kg respectively. Calculate the values
of tensions T1,T2 and T3 when:
(i) the whole system is going upwards with an acceleration of 2 m/s2 and
(ii) the whole system is stationary. (g=9.8 m/s2)

given system.

5. Three equal weights of mass m each are hanging on a string passing over a fixed pulley as shown in fig. Find
the tensions in the string connecting weights A to B and B to C respectively.

the help of a frictionless pulley and rope system shown in fig. What horizontal force
should be applied on the rope to produce an acceleration of 10 cms-1?

7. In terms of masses m1, m2 and g find the acceleration of both the blocks shown in Fig.
.Neglects all friction and masses of the pulley.

8. Two blocks of mass 50 kg and 30kg Connected by a massless string pass over a light, friction-less pulley and rest on
two smooth planes inclined at 30° and 60° respectively, with the horizontal. Determined acceleration in the two
blocks and tension in the string.
9. Why is pulling easier than pushing?
10. Block A of mass 4 kg and block B of mass 6 kg are resting on a horizontal surface as shown in the figure. There is no
friction between the block B and the horizontal surface. The coefficient of friction between the two blocks is 0.2. If
the value of g = 10 ms–2, the maximum horizontal force F that can be applied on block B without any relative motion

(a) 20N (b) 40 N (c) 60 N (d) 100 N
11. A wooden block of mass 6kg is placed on block B of mass 8kg lying on horizontal wooden table when force of 12 N

that the two blocks just move together. Given coefficient of friction between block B and table is 0.25.
12. A mass of 200 kg is placed on a rough inclined plane of angle 30o. If coefficient of limiting friction is , find the

least forces in newton , acting parallel to the plane (i) to keep the mass from sliding down (ii) to move the mass up the
plane.
13. When an automobile moving with a speed of 36 km/h reaches an upward inclined road of angle 30°, its engine is
switched off. If the coefficient of friction involved is 0.1, how much distance will the automobile move before coming
to rest? (g = 10 m/s2)

14. A block of mass 0.1kg is held against a wall applying a horizontal force of 5N on the block. If
the coefficient of friction between the block and the wall is 0.5. the magnitude of the friction

15. A body of mass m rests on a horizontal floor with which it has a coefficient of static friction μ. It is desired to make
the body move by applying the minimum possible force F. Find the magnitude of F and the direction in which it has

16. The pulleys and strings shown in the figure are smooth and a negligible mass. For the system to
remain in equilibrium, find the angle θ.
17. A 12 kgf horizontal force pushes a block weighing 5 kgf against a vertical wall. The coefficient of static friction
between the wall and the block is 0.5, and the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.4.
(a) Will the block move?
(b) In unit-vector notation, what is the force on the block from the wall?
18. A chain of mass m and length L is over hanging from the edge of a smooth horizontal table such that 3/4th of its
length is lying on the table. Find the work done in pulling the chain completely on to the table. ( )
19. A chain of mass M and length L is placed on table, such that only a part of it is on table and remaining part hangs in
air. If the coefficient of friction between chain and table is , find the maximum length of chain that can hang in air
without sliding. ( )

ladder makes an angle of 60° with the ground. What should be the minimum value of the coefficient of friction, so
